DAVID ALLEN SHOLES, JR.

LAKE IN THE HILLS,IL

Summary

Resourceful and innovative general maintenance worker with several years of hands-on experience carrying out various maintenance needs.

Skilled in analyzing repair requests, resolving and troubleshooting common failures and stocking adequate maintenance materials.

Friendly and caring listener, desiring to meet your custom project requests.

One of my greatest joys and highest motivations is to provide others with a safe and well functioning physical environment, to meet their needs. So, I fix, restore, upgrade or remove items which each person or company needs to serve themselves and others.

Similarly, I enjoy and am motivated to encouraging others, personally, by providing tools of wisdom, practical knowledge, coping skills and "life-hacks" for them to maintain and improve their personal needs and goals.

My drive for continuous improvement, innovation and thinking outside the box are coupled with recognizing that some things do not need improved on nor replaced, rather just maintained well or restored to their original purpose- cleaned, lubed, tightened, etc.

I believe my combination of many years of training and experience in environmental maintenance & repairs, in sync with my social work and relational supports, to help people function in their social environment, could serve the Huntley High School well.

The school needs the structural property to work well, and someone who appreciates the students whom the building serves.

Legally, as well, I had regularly obtained clearances for serving children and adults, during my 10yr mental health service. I even happen to have obtained recent clearances, for this year, due to a volunteer assignment I was preparing for charity work with children.

Work History

On-Site Maintenance Tech

Metro Property Management
  • Residential and Commercial property repairs and installations.
  • Decreased company expenditures by researching resourceful ways to repair & preserve broken property, versus replacing with new.
  • Designed a color-coded Excel spreadsheet 'Reference Guide' map for a 120-apartment property. This map relayed pertinent info about property structures and mechanical systems, which saved future maintenance technicians and other service professionals/vendors time and grief from having to research this info from scratch. (ie. I relayed technical info on how to run and troubleshoot the HVAC boiler system, by physically labeling the valves & guages, then recording their settings in my Reference Guide. Without this info and labeling, the old system could clog, from hardwater build-up, create leaks, shut down the system and leave 30 tenants without heat, in the winter, and no one knew how to prevent or repair it.)

Machine Operator, Floor Person & Line Driver

i2-tech
  • Moved up quickly from machinge operator to team lead. Improved product handling efficiency times.
  • Saved wasted money by fixing and reusing tools and supplies. (ie. employees were trashing $40 wire cutters, because blades were dull. I sharpened the blades on a grinding wheel, to extend the life of the wire cutters.)
  • Chosen for 'Top 10 Team' task force, which problem-solved product issues.

Independent Contractor Snow removal

Glen Morris Lawncare
  • Seasonal work. Snow removal with snowblowers, shovels and ice breakers. Salted walkways.

Independent Contractor Maintenance Tech

Quality Inn Suites
  • Temporary maintenance position for hotel. Repaired and replaced broken property.

Quality Assurance Inspector

Polymar
  • Plastic injection molding products, Quality Assurance.
  • Chosen for '5S' workplace organization team: A. Saved company money through waste prevention and recycling ideas (ie. defect prevention via proper machine use and product handling. Recycling plastics that could be remelted and formed.) B. Organized the environment ergonomically, for safety and efficient use of space (ie. stacking rolling carts which opened "parking" space for storage shelves. Then marking the floor for proper ongoing parking and storage of items).
  • Worked overtime regularly (12hr shifts), helping all three shifts.
  • Cross-trained in multiple departments, learning new skills.
  • Designed interactive electronic spreadsheet "product samples storage map", and relabled the storage closet. Prior to this some product samples were hard to find, yet were needed quickly for current product inspections. My spreadsheet allowed for a quick "Control F" search of the part, which would highlight the exact area of the closet that it was stored.

Therapeutic Support Staff

Philhaven
  • One-to-one Therapeutic Support Staff for children and young adults with mental health diagnoses, ages 3 to 21. Helped to create and implement treatment plan strategies for clients and their support system to succeed in the client's treatment goals.
  • Specialized in meeting clients at their developmental level and using their strengths to overcome weaknesses.
  • Most importantly I enjoyed seeing mental health clients learn and practice new coping and social skills, which improved their ability to relate to others in appropriate, mutually acceptable, even enjoyable relationships. For example, autistic clients went from socially awkward one-sided converstions, to being able to listen to and respond to social cues (ie. One client transitioned from condescendingly bragging about his bowling successes, to practice celebrating and encouraging the success of others. His peers transitioned from avoiding him, to joining him in high-fives and hugs for successes.)
  • Upgraded Excel spreadsheets and Word documents, which improved efficiency of progress notes communication to the treatment team. My templates provided an electronic format for my supervisors to easily convert statistics into the charts and graphs they were required to display at their treatment plan meetings. I was publically praised for this systemic improvement.
  • Supported other departments during my own department's downtimes and was flexible to work multiple shifts. (ie. My department was a mobile Behavioral Health program. But, I also was available as a substitute for the campus' Inpatient, Residential and Day Hospital programs.)

Environmental Coordinator; Auditor of Incoming Material; Panel Puller; Custom Drawer Fronts

Conestoga Wood Specialties
  • Custom wood cabinetry, multiple positions.
  • Earned training certificates related to environmental compliance, reduced waste in every department, increased recycling and proper disposal of waste. Updated MSDS sheets in the computer system.
  • Volunteered on Safety Team and First Aid team, to provide accident prevention training, as well as emergency first aid treatement, with follow-up reporting of incidents.
  • Always alert to resolve machine and product failures (ie. Resolved a timing issue with a machine that had often damaged the product and the router bits, due to their collision.)

Independent Contractor Laborer

Ephrata General Store/322
  • Temporary position. Organized and cleaned up food storage trailers, salvaged undamaged items, and brought order to messy storage systems.

Mobile Home manufacturing

Liberty Homes

Maintained quality craftsmanship. Trusted to repair items from other employees' errors.

Field Director

Teen Haven
  • Mentored and brought out the best in children and youth, teaching lasting values.

Multiple voluntary and paid internal and external human services

Water Street Rescue Mission
  • Did whatever I could to support the mission's work: recycling, donations pick-up, sorting, processing, and distribution; thrift store clerk; multiple years camp counselor; maintenance; job search assistant; Spanish/English translator; food processing and service; janitorial.

Handyman

David Sholes Handyman LLC (5yrs as Zero Rezd LLC)
Lake In The Hills, IL
05.2019 - Current
  • Residential and Commercial property handyman: preventive mainenance, repairs, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, moving, recycling, cleaning, etc.
  • Subcontracted for large local property management company, with hundreds of properties, 4+yrs. Freelance word of mouth referrals to serve any customer. Had repeat customers and multiple referrals. Currently subcontracting with local property management, and freelance.
  • Pressure washing - all washable exterior structures: siding, gutters, decks/patios, walkways, driveways, stairs, lawn furniture, etc.
  • Emphasis on root cause analysis repairs, to fix source of problem, versus simply patching over the damages, to prevent symptom damages recurring later. Listened to needs of customers, to create best diagnosis and resolution.
  • Provided before and after photos and videos, along with detailed itemizations and professional QuickBooks invoices, to customers. The property management companies like the ease of reviewing repairs from their office. They complimented me that not all of their subcontractors provide this service. The homeowners like these media links and details for areas out of their view and for transparency of what was done. Many customers thanked me for effective communication and allowing feedback on my repairs, until they were satisfied with the results versus some service technicians who claimed the repair was done, but it was not, and who did no follow-up.
  • I'm a registered LLC and insured for Worker's Compensation, Business, and Commercial Auto. I own a 10 ft cutaway van/box truck, full of tools, and have a storage unit housing 2 pressure washers and other supplies, to provide multiple types of repairs.

Powder Coating: Quaility Control and Technician

Keylink Fencing & Railing (under Superior P. P.)
New Holland , PA
03.2018 - 10.2019
  • Maintained powder coating wash system, via chemical titration tests, then applied proper chemical amounts. Inspected, cleaned and maintained system hardware.
  • Cross-trained to operate the entire powder coating system, from from start to finish. Improved product quality by adjusting and upgrading hardware, computure entry settings.
  • Inspected and problem-solved quality failures, then relayed info to appropriate channels, for improvements.
  • Was personally complimented by Plant Manager for decreasing rework of materials, via higher quality product output.
  • Volunteered on Safety Team, updating all MSDS sheets, electronically and printed, by contacting product vendors for updates.
  • Designed Standard Operating Procedures, created during my downtime, to help future employees understand the job tasks which had not been provided during my training. A coworker friend contacted me, a few years after I had left the company, to thank me for how useful the SOPs were, recognizing I had no opportunity to personally train my replacements before leaving.

Whenever possible I like to go beyond repair into innovative upgrade and inventiveness, to serve other better than before.
