1. Daily property/evidence receiving. Including but not restricted to-entering items into BEAST (Porter Lee inventory system), insuring each item is packaged and marked per guidelines of the Indianapolis Crime Lab and state regulations. Research reports for case information to add during receiving. Insuring all items intended for IMCFSA (Indianapolis Marion County Forensic Services Agency) are entered into the correct location to be taken to the lab on the designated weekday.
2. Answering phone calls regarding evidence and property from both the community as well as insurance companies, attorneys, as well as prosecutors and courts.
3. Preparing paperwork for the return of weapons. Background check paperwork is compiled by the P&E specialist and forwarded to the Administrative Division Captain. Once the process is completed, the P&E specialist will schedule return appointments and collect all relative information from the individual upon return.
4. Property and evidence prep for auctions and destructions. General items scheduled for destruction that could be sent to auction will be organized by the P&E specialist. The P&E specialist will also coordinate and research the weapons database for yearly destruction of all weapons meeting the criteria for destruction. The P&E specialist will also maintain a scheduled disposal of the biohazard waste from the property and evidence room.
5. Serve as a “expert” witness in court cases as needed/required.
6. Transport evidence to labs as needed as well as collecting evidence from local hospitals as needed.
7. Conduct monthly and yearly audits of property and evidence items in property room.
8. Assist, as needed, the detective division with case information and/or communication with individuals in said cases. Maintain communication with IMPD firearms detective (monthly lists of gun cases and other items sent to IMCFSA in related gun cases.)
9. Maintain currency from cases and when necessary, transport money to City of Lawrence Controller’s Office for deposit into city’s General Fund.
10. Perform other duties, as directed.
11. Yearly property/packaging training for officers (department wide)
12. Training Secondary Property Clerk, as well as overseeing and maintaining department policies and procedures for property room.
A. Working Conditions:
1. Office hours as required-Monday through Friday, 8am-4:30pm, except for government holidays. Office hours can be altered with approval of the Administrative Division Captain-this would also include any overtime.
2. The job requires lifting of up to 50# on occasion. Lifting, stooping, bending, climbing is all part of the general duties as necessary to perform all other said duties.
3. Property and Evidence Specialist must have a general knowledge of the following: Microsoft programming, emailing, property room inventory program (BEAST), city geography as well as the Lawrence Police Department General Orders.
4. Must have the ability to respond to requests from both the community as well as law enforcement officials.
5. Prioritize duties, maintain confidentiality, possess strong organizational skills and be detail oriented in every facet of their job.
6. Communicate clearly and concisely-both in writing as well as orally.
7. Research laws, cases and individuals- as it pertains to the daily job duties.
