Activities

  • UNICEF: The UNICEF club at BSGE met every Friday and was created in order to raise awareness and provide humanitarian aid for kids in developing countries. I have participated in the club through fundraisers such as UNICEF's Trick-or-Treat initiative, helped organize events, and spread awareness to fellow students about joining the club.
  • United We Dream DACA Movement: I am a part of the United We Dream youth-led movement and am one of their active protestors. I have joined multiple demonstrations in New York, Washington D.C, and other neighboring states in order to fight for DACA recipients' rights and future. At the protests, I listened to speeches, called and emailed members of Congress, and encouraged other people to join the UWD coalition.
  • Girls Who Code Summer Immersion Program: In this intensive summer program, I spent eight weeks learning how to code. Our group was hosted by the company We Work, and every day I was exposed to a corporate environment and witnessed all of the varying positions people held within the company. Every week we worked on a different project and had meetings with the CEOs and the managers of other departments. For the final project, my fellow group members and I created a website called Coders For Education, where we used Python, HTML, and other languages to ensure interactivity and professional design. The website offered different information on various groups of children who do not have access to adequate educational opportunities and links to organizations we partnered with to promote a better future for underprivileged youth.
  • Bundle & Bliss: My partners and I created a group called Bundle & Bliss, through which we built care packages full of organic products for babies at Forestdale Foster Home. We have created a blog and different social media accounts to inform the public about our progress.
  • Women In Computing at Cornell: WICC is a female organization at Cornell that supports aspiring computer scientists/engineers with resources and guidance as they navigate their undergraduate careers at Cornell. I have been to many of their workshops, and pop-ups where members get the opportunity to interact with high-tech companies in the industry. Through such events, we are able to speak to recruiters and understand the different criteria they look for when reviewing a candidate's profile for a given position. Lastly, WICC also gives me the opportunity to learn about different concepts present within the industry like AI, cybersecurity, etc.
  • Underrepresented Minorities In Computing: This is a student group at Cornell that supports underrepresented minorities pursuing a career in computer science, information science, or computer engineering. As a member of URMC, I get to meet peers that struggle with the same issues that I do. I attend a lot of their workshops that help us build resumes and help us grasp a better understanding of our career path and interview process. Most URMC meetings also allow us to collaboratively work on material from courses that members are taking in order to learn from one another and build communication as well as teamwork skills.
