Accomplishments

  • Iowa Workforce I counselled and introduced hand and power tools to underprivileged people (over age 13). I also went on to teach simple plumbing and electrical installations as well as the importance of PPE and safety procedures and housekeeping.
  • HABITAT HOMES 1983-1989 A church member's house was destroyed by an electrical fire, My Mother (Judith Brown/ Martin) during her early years as a carpenter, created a concept where if the building material were donated we could instruct volunteers to help clean up and build back destroyed home. She presented the idea to said church and people really wanted to get involved. Material was donated and we rounded up the community and together introduced specific tasks to volunteers accordingly. My Mother and I followed strict (California) codes and built houses back better than originally. The concept was a great success. Some volunteers even went into the construction field as this opened up opportunities for paying jobs and a dependable career. We were responsible for many folks who went on to be successful and savvy in a trade they can depend on. This concept took on a life of its own and is now what the world knows as "Habitat for Humanity "
