Various Roles

City of Newport News
Newport News, VA
08.1999 - 08.2024
  • Over the past 14 years, I have been promoted into roles with increased responsibility and accountability, enabling me to fulfill the organization's strategic goals
  • I worked under the direction of a Lieutenant, managing 473 inmates and 22 deputies in a progressive correctional facility
  • Advise inmates on their charges, custody levels, and historical concerns, and assist in coordinating internal and external referrals
  • Counsel recruits are trained in policy changes and safe working procedures
  • Revamp guidelines regarding inmate transporting and behavior management to ensure a safe and productive work environment
  • Assist in the preparation of inmate reports for middle- and upper-management
  • Develop and maintain effective relationships between inmates and staff to ensure safety
  • Coordinate inmate contacts with appropriate community service connections for transition purposes
  • Instrumental in opening, supervising, and operating the original Newport News Rehabilitation Center
  • My task in 2010 was to revamp the Trusty Worker program, an internal work-rewards system for NNSO inmates
  • Based on the application and review of charges and history, inmates were approved for employment as kitchen, maintenance, floor, or laundry workers
  • The inmate hours worked showed cost savings of approximately $200,000 per year, as outside contractors typically staffed these positions
  • The program allowed inmates to experience a sense of accomplishment and acquire skills necessary to find employment upon release, and the facility saved thousands in contractor costs
  • My contact with the surrounding communities helped create a positive, win-win opportunity for the inmate population, which in turn generated jobs for the Newport News Sheriff's Office Correction facility
  • My responsibilities also required me to personally document and train new personnel in 2011 to take over the program
