I have a deep interest in history and exploring remote regions of the world. A trip to the schools far north of the Arctic circle inspired me to co-create my own school (MUSE Academy) in Brooklyn. I am lucky to have a teenage son with a deep interest in geography and urban planning, so most of our trips have involved adventures far off the well-worn path - including tours around our own city which we conduct every month. These explorations involve history, music, and food - what could be better? I suppose this is also true of my research and pedagogical interests: I like to explore areas of study and scholarship that are not commonly known or were once known, and have been forgotten or, in many cases, marginalized. My teaching and leadership style is a spirited dance between the traditional and the "new" - as when my school enhanced the Suzuki strings program with a curriculum involving composers of the Harlem Renaissance - a highlight of the year.
