Continue teaching thematically with a hand-on approach by incorporating various forms of literature and current events into our 4th grade curriculum of Florida. Ongoing WOW trainings through our school faculty team.
Attended the Reading First Conference to learn how to better assist the individual needs of my students.
Continued Guided Reading and had each member of the classroom be a part of a variety of book clubs, in which we regularly would meet and discuss the current novel we were reading.

3rd and 4th Grade Classroom Teacher
Key Largo School
Key Largo, FL
06.1996 - 06.2003
Taught 3rd and 4th grade in a highly technological school that was a National school of Excellence, Bell SOuth School Power to Learn School, and George Lucas Foundation School.
Selected as part of the cadre from Monroe County to travel to New Your City and Duck Key to become trainers in Learning Styles. Trained our staff with hands-on make and take series of workshops. Traveled to New Orleans to observe a school using learning styles.
Traveled to Arizona to a Brain Research conference to learn more about how to successfully use ITI in our classrooms to tie the curriculum into the world around them and broaden their knowledge.
While in 3rd grade taught in the Wild Kingdom program, promoting responsibility in the students by having each child adopt an animal that resided in the pod. Built community-school connections by having students regularly go to John Pennekamp Park and work as Rangers, and work in the local banks to promote their understanding of the business world. Helped to coordinate field trips each month that tied directly into our curriculum.
Served as team leader in 4th grade and given an entirely new team to create an Integrated Thematic Instructional (ITI) environment that excited the children about learning. I developed The Island theme. Working in an open pod school, each of the five teachers represented a different business unique to the Florida Keys. Everything revolved around the theme: names of the classes, room decor, student jobs, and the community outreach and services the classes did. In the Writer's Reef, I selected 5 role models each quarter to be 'Master Divers'. At the end of the quarter, they were awarded a complimentary trip with their parents to a half-day glass bottom boat tour and a half-day swim with the dolphins.
Coordinated with the Reef Relief Foundation through a grant, a free field trip to Pennekamp Park, and a slide presentation to all the 4th grade classrooms.
Coordinated numerous day field trips and overnight field trip to Museums, Islands, Pigeon Key, Bahia Honda, Turtle Hospital, Keys Marine Research Lab, National Weather Station, Dolphin Research Center, Windley Key, Pow Wows, slough slogging in the Everglades National Park, and many more. Regularly had guest speakers in my classroom to expose the children to different careers. All field trips and speakers coordinated with the class literature and curriculum we were studying in accordance with the Florida Sunshine State Standards.
Served as the Web Master for the 4th Grade and created a site that was inviting and informative to parents, as well as providing links for the children to go to when at home. I went on to help other teams create their web sites.
