Childhood

  • Generally speaking, I grew up around music my entire life because my father and his siblings were musicians and singers. My father had a large music background as a child, and we had a music studio in our home. That inspired me to pursue a music career. My father was my manager as a child.
  • I was mostly raised in church, and I grew up in the household with music. I was very active in church, and I sung in church choirs from the age of5 to19 years old. I was always in Choir in church and school. I engaged in other activities such as dancing and a drill team but my main interest in song writing and singing.
  • At the age of nine my nieces and I formed a singing group called “Unique” that my father managed.

One or two stories remembered most about childhood

Everyone always visited our house every weekend because we had a music studio in our basement.

How was it growing up

  • I grew up going to church with my parents and other family members on my father’s side who were in the Choir and musicians at church. We spent a lot of time in church and with family, singing, and making songs.
  • I lived in the suburbs’. Since my parents and siblings were much older, I often ventured out to my older siblings’ house because they had children my age. I was born an aunt, so I hung out with my nieces a lot.
  • Collectively we sung in a church choir called “Cogic” and we traveled to different churches in Cincinnati, Ohio, and in other parts of Ohio, including Columbus and Akron. Our group ventured out into developing our own sound. By the ages of13-14 our group broke up due to different interests and I ended up solo continuing to do music by myself.
  • At the age of15 our immediate family relocated to Dallas, Texas due to a job transfer that my mother accepted. We joined the Potters House, Dallas, Texas. I joined the Choir in the Youth Ministry and sung for approximately two years. The Youth Choir sung in the main Sanctuary of the Potters House of Dallas, Texas. In the midst of that I tried out for Sunday’s Best which was held at the Potters House of Dallas, Texas I ventured out of church choir at the age of nineteen and at the age of twenty (20) years old I started doing R&B music.

Most Important Friendships

  • I didn’t maintain a lot of friendships because I switched schools frequently during my elementary and High School years. We relocated to Dallas, Texas during my Junior year of High School and I had to develop new friendships.
  • One of my first friendships was Sydney Cash when I was in the first grade and attended Newlife Christian Academy, Cincinnati, Ohio. My next best friend was Jameela Morris when I was in third grade.
  • In Junior High School my best friend was Natalia Porter at St Francis De Sales, Catholic School.
  • In High School my best friend was Khadijah Hardy and last but not least I made a friend outside of school named Marshell Thorton. That round up all of my most important friendships.

News of Neighborhood flowing

The news of my neighborhood usually flowed through social media (i.e., Facebook, etc.).

Earliest School Day memories

I really didn’t have many memories because I often switched schools, so I didn’t have a chance to make lasting friends. My parents didn’t get along at home, so I went to school feeling sad and it was hard for me to enjoy early school moments because I was going through things at home and it distracted me from having good school day memories.

What I learned in first years of school that I would like to pass along to the next generation

I learned that everyone is not your friend and that being off to yourself is not all too bad because sometimes being alone shows how unique you really are. I would tell the next generation to “Never try to fit in, always be yourself.”

Were You Involved in sports, music, drama, or other extra curricula activities

Yes, other than music I have been involved in other activities such as soccer in first and second grade, karate, drill team with marching band, Girl Scouts, and ran in Marathon, ballet, tap dancing, and drama, I was involved in a church play.

What did you want to be when you grew up

  • Since the age of three (3) years old, I have been singing. I started choir at the age of five (5) so growing up I was always pushed to become a singer but I always secretly wanted to be a model and an actress.
  • But growing up, with me and my nieces doing each other’s hair, that inspired me to want to become a Cosmetologist. I also at a point of time, I desired to become an obstetrician to deliver babies, but that changed as I got older and I just wanted to become a Cosmetologist.

What was the most joyous fulfilling times of your life

Singing in the Youth Choir at the Potters House Youth Choir from age15–19-year-old and having the opportunity to travel with the choir to San Antonio, Texas.

Any sad, tragic, or difficult times that you would like to share

The most detrimental life situation that I’ve encountered was when I lost my boyfriend in2017. That really opened up my eyes to push me to pursue my music even more. He was a rap artist. We were together for a year and half and followed the idea of being back together after being broken up, and he was shot during the10th of December and passed at1:15am on December11th. This happened one hour after we had just spoken on the phone and I was planning to travel from Dallas, Texas to visit him that upcoming week in Cincinnati, Ohio.

What Lifelong lesson did you learn from these tough times

The lesson I’ve learned was to always cherish the moments and times you have with people because you never know when it will be your last time seeing them.

Were there any moments that you recall as true break throughs in any area of your life

Yes, moving to Dallas, Texas was a breakthrough for me because it took me out of my comfort zone and introduced me to things that I thought I would never experience or see in my lifetime.

If you could do anything differently in your life what would that be

Finishing college in Business Management and if I could have followed through with Cosmetology so that I could already have my Cosmetology license when I graduated from High School.

Are there any particular happy, funny, sad, or instructive lessons you’ve learned while growing up

I’ve learned to always stay true to self and to never give up. Also, like my grandpa always told me “It’s not what you wanna do, it’s what you gotta do!” Also, the lessons I’ve learned from all that I’ve gone through is that everything that you go through happens for a reason and sometimes those reasons be an open door to getting you to the next level because sometimes you have to be uncomfortable to experience new things to better your situation.

What makes me special and interesting

  • What makes me special is that I give a vibe and energy that I feel the world is missing and looking for.
  • I’m new but old school at the same time and I have standards and morals. I also have a story that I feel others can relate to that’s listening to my music to let them know that they’re not alone.
  • I feel like to world would love my whole life and who I am and who I am soon to be.

How can he or she be best described

The best way to describe me is that I’m full of love, light, laughter, and wisdom. My pain through my voice expresses the hurt I’ve been through but heals souls at the same time. With that being said, that made me who I am with the big heart that I have, but if you rub me the wrong way, I will move accordingly.

Which were the events that marked or changed your life

  • My life changing experiences were singing with bands, freestyling lyrics, learning how to go along with the flow of the band, singing and meeting people and gaining relationships that I was in the choir with at Fire House Youth Choir.
  • Experiencing different relationships through my singing at Applebee that linked me up with Executive Producers in Dallas, Texas. They were all very inspiring and lifechanging and I can’t wait to see what’s next for me staying focused and dedicated to my craft.

What kind of effect did he or she have on the world or other people

The effect that I have on people is when I sing, people say that they get chills and that they want to hear more. That inspires me to keep making a change and let more people hear my voice.

What are the adjectives you would most use to describe the person

A couple of adjectives that I use for myself is that I’m super energetic, loving, funny, smart, straight forward (direct), sweet, intellectual, go-getter, Leo, driven, Sweetheart, that loving but don’t play all the time, about my business, and determined.

What examples from their life illustrate those qualities

  • The things about me, I lived a very raw and uncut life that led me to church followed up with a lot of counseling, so I knew.
  • I grew up in church which made me the sweet, loving, energetic person, but the raw and uncut version of me comes from jumping off the porch, bumping my head to learn my own direction.

Did he or she overcome obstacles, take, risks or get lucky

I’ve taken a lot of risk dealing with different situations such as being in different groups, music labels, and just working with family and they all in some types of way have let me down and disappointed me so I just keep making moves an staying focused and determined and staying down until someone notices me.

When did you start rapping/singing

I started singing when I was3 years old although my mother says I was humming the tune of “Barney” at11 months old, and they were surprised because they recognized the tune and I was able to hum the notes accurately. I started in church choir at the age of5 years old. I started really singing and doing music when my father formed the group of me and my nieces between the ages of9 to13. Our group name was “UniQue”. After me and my three nieces broke the group up after we got to Senior High school, I ended up going solo.

If you weren’t doing what you do today what other job would you have

If I didn’t go into doing music, I would be in school for hair and cosmetology and business management. I also know sign language and early childhood development. I wanted my own daycare before I had my own children, but I veered away from that and fell in love with Security and Serving.

Where do you play

I’ve performed at a couple of places in Deep Elm, in Dallas, Texas, TD Jakes church The Potters House of Dallas, Texas, different churches singing with COGIC youth choir, Luxury singing group, I performed for Elements youth studios in downtown Cincinnati, Ohio, Iamdallas Hip-hop, Reminisce in Hamilton, Ohio, Mad Frog (which doesn’t exist anymore), I also sung or funerals, graduations, and games, weddings, and mostly all types of special occasions.

How did you get your performance name

Well, a long story short…my second cousin named Angel who brough my mother home from the hospital after she had me and my mother named me after her, as my middle name “Angel”. Growing up, since my first name was Destiney, lots of people started calling me “Destiny’s Child” singing group. I just ended up telling people my name was Angel. I ended up having a singing group with my nieces and our name was “UniQue” so after a while, I ended up coming up with the name “AnJel UniQue” changing the “g” in Angel to a “J” to make it unique. I also came up with it because I noticed that the pronunciation of Angel was “An-Jel” with a “J” and that’s what originally made me change it.

In what way was he or she an influence to family, society, or professionally

I was an influence to my younger brother who is8 years younger than me. We both grew up in a family with many musicians and singers. My father had a recording studio in our house and someone was always coming by to get in the studio to record. My younger brother is a musician and he soon learned how to sing and record songs in the studio. I inspired him a lot. He told me that he was inspired by my singing and little did we know, he could also sing.

What makes your sound unique

My sound is unique is that it’s new and my voice is distinctive, and it has a new sound.

How did you get into music

I was born to do music. My father’s family have a long history of musicians and singers. His mother sang, his grandmother played the piano, and my father plays the base guitar, makes music, and was in a family group with live band and singers as children. They all sing and play instruments, so I pretty much have been surrounded by music all of my life. We had a full studio in our house growing up.

Why should people listen to your music

Because I inspire and enlighten strong independent women to keep going no matter what.

Share the stage with any notables

I haven’t been on stage with anyone famous people, but I know famous people and I’ve been on stage with Bishop TD Jakes at his church in the sanctuary.

What are some of my band accomplishments

I am not in a band.

Any interesting/funny things happen to band thus far

No because I’m not in a band.
