Work History

Graduate Student Researcher

UT Southwestern Medical Center (Lab Of Eric Olson)
05.2018 - 05.2022
  • Determined the durability and longevity of a CRISPR/Cas9 genome-editing strategy as a therapeutic for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.
  • Utilized base editors to correct mutations that cause multisystemic smooth muscle dysfunction syndrome.
  • Designed experiments to determine the mechanism by which Twist2+ cells, a skeletal muscle stem cell population, fuse to specific muscle fiber types.
  • Mentored junior graduate students and visiting undergraduate scholars in experimental design and hypothesis generation.

Undergraduate Research Assistant

Baylor College Of Medicine (Lab Of Bert O'Malley)
06.2014 - 01.2018
  • Elucidated the consequences of TRAF4 mediated, non-proteolytic ubiquitination of the Androgen Receptor and TrKA, a receptor tyrosine kinase, in the progression of prostate cancers.
  • Trained new undergraduate students in common molecular biology techniques such as Western Blotting, PCR, and cell culture.

Leadership Experiences

Co-President of Medical Genetics Club (2022- 2024)

  • Collaborated with a medical geneticist at Parkland Hospital to develop a series of lecture topics.
  • Collaborated with physicians at the Medical Genetics Clinic at Children's to expose medical students to the field of medical genetics. Current goal is to establish a shadowing program.

Future Leaders in Pedagogy (FLiP) Committee Member (2021 - 2024)

  • Collaborated with post-doctoral candidates to organize seminars on undergraduate and post-graduate education. Invited faculty members to discuss their experiences in mentorship and lessons they have learned in their careers.
  • Lead the effort to develop training courses for UTSW's Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) and new graduate students in molecular biology.

Journal Club Leader for UTSW's Medical Student Summer Research Program (2018-2019)

  • Developed a 6 week plan incorporating papers from various fields ranging from cholesterol metabolism to MRI analysis.
  • Facilitated discussions with medical students to discuss scientific virtues and flaws of seminal research work. Incorporated an emphasis on ethics and clinical translation.
  • Mentored students on hypothesis generation and scientific presentations.

Volunteer Experiences

UT Southwestern Free Clinics (2016 - 2024)

  • As as part team consisting of two medical students and a faculty member, provided free medical care to uninsured individuals in Dallas country.
  • Since returning from graduate school, mentored junior medical students on patient interviewing, differential generation, and development of treatment plans. Highlighted the importance of accounting for social circumstance while determining a treatment plan.

United to Serve Educational Fair at TJ Rusk Middle School (2016 - 2024)

  • As part of the science education portion of the fair, led a booth educating community members about DNA and genetic diseases.
  • Developed a simple protocol to extract DNA from strawberries for children of all ages.
  • As part of the health education portion of the fair, co-led a booth on diabetes education. Educated families on risk factors for diabetes and warning signs to monitor. In addition, provided on-site free blood-sugar screening.

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Clinical Symposium (2017-2018)

  • Assisted patients and families in getting checked into the symposium and aided them in navigating Clement's Hospital.
  • Had the opportunity to meet DMD patients and their families in order to discuss my thesis work.

Stewpot Volunteer (2016-2018)

  • Assisted in sorting and serving free meals to homeless individuals in the Dallas metropolitan area.
  • Learned about government support programs like Texas Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) and SNAP (food stamps). During clinical rotations, identified families who could benefit from these services and collaborated with social work teams to determine eligibility.

KIPP Impact Alternative Spring Break (2013)

  • Invested 6 months learning about common issues plaguing the US primary education system (reading competency, college readiness, and standardized exams)
  • At KIPP Elementary School in Jacksonville, FL, assisted a 5th grade math teacher to make lesson plans about 2 digit division and fractions.
  • Organized after-school workshops for KIPP students to highlight the importance of a secondary education.
