Communication

  • Being part of Navy ship evolutions has helped me speak directly, clearly, and respond well with adequate training. Effective communication is key to resolving team problems. Without effective communication, proper tracking, timely turnover of shifts, and prompt response times, consequences can be fatal. Being part of one of the nations aircraft carriers has instilled fast and effective communication during times of combat on warships, when a crew forms battle stations to face danger at sea.
  • Being a registered nurse requires excellent communication skills for high-quality care. During my clinical experience, my communication skills have progressed and continue to improve. It is essential not only to communicate with the healthcare team but also with the patient and their family.

Leadership

  • Experience as a work and area supervisor has allowed me to work with diverse individuals. It has also helped me understand my role as a leader, bringing others together as a team. Listening and being an example are two of the most valuable qualities I have as a leader.
  • Working as a registered nurse at a corrections facility has greatly enhanced my leadership skills in the nursing profession. During the night shift, there was a light staff that required teamwork and leadership to work through a change smoothly. This experience and environment have challenged me and required me to grow independently.
