Veteran jazz educator, jazz trumpeter, and jazz clinician in New England for over 30 years. Has performed extensively with top National and Regional acts, instructed ensembles and improvisation classes at the collegiate and secondary level, and has established nationally recognized jazz program in Medfield Public Schools. In the last 5.5 and a half years, Doug has more than doubled the number of students involved in WPI Jazz Groups and greatly expanded the Jazz Departments digital outreach, including over 150 performance videos on the YouTube @wpijazz channel. In May 2023, Doug led the WPI Jazz Groups on a successful performance tour of New Orleans. Active guest artist and lecturer at colleges and secondary schools including UMASS Amherst, MIT, URI, Berklee School of Music, and Harvard. Skilled composer, arranger, improviser, recording artist, conductor, and band leader in jazz/latin/classical/world-music styles.
Directed jazz/brass ensembles and classes in jazz theory, jazz history, and composition. Faculty Advisor to Jazz Groups, Jazz History Database, and African Percussion Ensemble.
Ran MAJE Jazz Clinician Program. Coordinated over 100 jazz clinics with 30 different school districts and professional jazz musicians/educators.
Director of Music for Medfield Public Schools. In addition to administrative duties (curriculum, staff development, hiring, budget), taught jazz bands, jazz combos, concert band, marching band, orchestra, pit band, brass quintet, brass ensemble, sax quartet, woodwind quintet. Extensive musical tours including USA East Coast, Canada, New Orleans, China, and Cuba.
Designed curriculum and taught jazz combos/improvisation courses during the 2000-2003 school year. Worked closely with MIT Director of Bands, Dr. Fred Harris.
Led jazz program at CCRI for spring semester of 1995-1996 school year. Taught classes in jazz harmony, jazz composition, and jazz history. Directed ensembles small group jazz ensembles.
