Teaching Philosophy

  • I believe that learning happens through real life experiences and curiosity. Consequently, two research-based learning theories that I believe most valuable are Bruner’s Scaffolding and Sweller’s Cognitive Load Theory. These teaching philosophies enable me to accomplish several things, such as to articulate how I teach based on pedagogy and theories of learning, to communicate to others what students will learn by having me as their instructor, to set realistic goals when designing curriculum, and lastly to have a useful self-assessment tool to continually shape and craft my teaching philosophy. For example, when learning is scaffolded effectively, formative assessments are built into the learning throughout the course. This allows students to practice the material they are learning and for faculty to provide feedback that helps students improve. Knowing that scaffolding is used intentionally in this way, I look for learning activities and assessments that build on the previous content and prepare students for subsequent material. Another learning theory critical to feedback is Cognitive Load Theory which posits that I cannot provide too much information to the student at once; otherwise, I risk overwhelming the student’s capacity to process all the information given, and very little of that information is retained. By leveraging learning theory tools like Scaffolding, and Cognitive Load, I encourage students to take the time to think beyond their textbooks, hoping to fuel their curiosity that drives higher-order thinking and questioning. The results of higher order thinking and questioning leads to greater consciousness and awareness.
