Research

Dissertation: Applying Frankl's Logotherapy Model to the Autobiographical Experiences of Holocaust Survivors; May 2020

  • Wilson Maina, Ph. D. Committee Chair, Patricia Wentz, Ph. D. Committee Chair, Diane E. Bagwell, Ph. D. Committee Member
  • This Qualitative study provided an educational opportunity to gain understanding of the specific Holocaust survivor experiences and their personal intrinsic qualities that served as primary coping mechanisms. When viewed through the conceptual framework of logotherapy, these qualities, as identified by the survivors themselves through their autobiographies, may be applied to individuals going through traumatic life experiences or suffering. The theoretical framework, logotherapy, was that of a Holocaust survivor and psychiatrist, Victor Frankl.
  • Future research opportunities include how teaching students about current societal issues (eg. homelessness) through the lens of logotherapy could create meaningful bridges of engagement, coping and learning.
