SHADOWING EXPERIENCE

 DR. CATHERINE KOHLER

  • CONTACT: (337) 477-4252
  • GILL BRIGHT ANIMAL HOSPITAL LAKE CHARLES, LAKE CHARLES, LA
  • Shadowed a general surgeon that performed neutering on several types of animals, observed how exactly the process was done with the incision, removal, and suturing of the animal.

DR. DAVID HEINEN

  • CONTACT: (337) 562-3761
  • OSCHNER CHRISTUS CLINIC FAMILY MEDICINE, LAKE CHARLES, LA
  • Shadowed a family doctor that treated people of all ages, observed how the day of a family doctor goes, whether it be new or check-up patients.

DR. RICHARD MARTINEZ

  • CONTACT: (337) 439-4706
  • LAKE CHARLES MEMORIAL HOSPITAL, LAKE CHARLES, LA
  • I was given the opportunity to shadow Dr. Martinez, a diagnostic radiologist, and was able to observe many different types of scans and some interventional radiology with patients. While looking at scans I was able to learn more about the human body and how many organs, veins, and arteries look on the X-rays or ultrasound. I was also able to observe core biopsy removals, ablations of cancers, and aspirations in kidneys.

DR. BILL LOWRY

  • CONTACT: BLOWRY@CENTERFORORTHO.COM
  • CENTER FOR ORTHOPAEDICS, LAKE CHARLES, LA
  • Shadowing Dr. Lowry, a physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist, showed me the lighthearted side of being a doctor. As I was following him around, I was able to sometimes see familiar faces which was very enjoyable. He would also go out of his way to make sure that his mostly elderly patients could completely understand what he was teaching them about their bodies. From his teachings, I was also able to glean knowledge on how doctors can have balanced work and family life.

DR. TYSON GREEN

  • CONTACT: TGREEN@CENTERFORORTHO.COM
  • When I shadowed Dr. Green, a podiatry specialist and surgeon, I saw the busier side of being a doctor. He would always be on the move, going from patient to patient to wrap gauze around an ankle or look at x-rays of a shattered heel. During my time following him, I was also allowed the opportunity to enter an OR for the first time to observe surgery to remove cancer around a toenail.

DR. WILLIAM GROVES

  • CONTACT: (337) 480-5530
  • LAKE CHARLES MEMORIAL HOSPITAL FOR WOMEN, LAKE CHARLES, LA
  • Even though I had only shadowed Dr. Groves, an obstetrician gynecologist, for a few days, it was an eventful experience for me because I was able to see internal surgeries. I had been given the opportunity to observe how vaginal hysterectomies are performed while also becoming more comfortable in an operating room.
