Although my time with Nucore was brief I was able to adapt to a very fast pace environment also the rigorous physical aspect of the job itself. As a Transportation Maintenance Worker two on Wolf Creek pass.
Duties supervise/lead a work crew to maintain 23 miles of state highway 160 and the state right of way. Eight miles of this route is 7 percent grades one of the steepest passes in the state. This highway is required to be manned for 24-hour coverage.
While supervising or leading a work crew there where two principals I had one production with safety. and two never ask a crew member to do something unsafe or that I wouldn't do myself.
Work duties there where many which include
First and foremost, make sure we have what is needed for the end result.
Supervised/lead a work crew of 5 employees on a daily basis and as many as 30 during special projects such as highway paving or chip sealing.
Plan day to day operations.
Assign work tasks to each crew member.
Monitor and promptly complete equipment maintenance work orders as they appear and conduct vehicle and equipment maintenance as it is needed.
Create and process work orders using different computer programs such as work manager, SAP and Google docs and Google sheets.
Conduct thorough pre and post trip inspections and make sure the work crew was as well, not only because it is required by federal law, But to minimize safety hazards also increase production with minimized down time.
Roadway maintenance such as Snow removal operation is a big part of what I did as this mountain pass averages 400 inches of snow fall per year.
Snow removal operation include moving snow off the roadway and clearing snow off the mountain to make room for more snow fall. For these tasks I used heavy equipment such as Plow trucks, Motor graders. Bulldozer. Front end loader and snow blowers both truck mounted, and loader mounted.
Other job duties performed.
I was part of the Avalanche mitigation team on wolf creek.
It is very safety sensitive work using high explosives and shooting slide paths with a howitzer it required close attention to detail and self awareness looking out for myself and the crew.
I was personally hands on part of what is called the gun crew
I would help set up a 105mm Howitzer cannon for each individual shot and go over checklists
I was a gunner which would fire the gun and also worked as a loader which would load each round into the gun.
First responder on a mountain pass there are several accidents through out the year winter or summer
Allot of these accidents I was the first on scene first and foremost was my own safety access the situation assist where I could wearing PPE , communicate with state patrol dispatch, fire and other entities like tow companies. Also clear wreckage with heavy equipment if needed.
These emergencies not just traffic accidents taught me and has equipped me with not only the ability to deal with stressfully situations but also to act quickly ,safely and efficiently.
