I have always felt drawn to nursing, partly because of my personal experiences with healthcare. My grandparents and both of my sisters have spent significant time in hospitals, and during those experiences I witnessed how much of a difference a caring nurse can make. My parents have always said that I am naturally caring, and over time I realized that nursing was the perfect way to turn that into a career. Being on both sides, as a family member and now as a nursing student, has strengthened my passion for this profession. I feel that nursing is truly the path I am meant to pursue.
I chose the accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing program because it provided the best opportunity to enter the profession efficiently, even though it was intimidating at first. As a first-generation college student, I did not have much guidance on navigating healthcare education. I completed my undergraduate degree in psychology to develop a strong foundation in understanding and communicating with people. The accelerated program required rapid learning and adaptability, but it has been an incredibly rewarding experience. It allowed me to develop clinical skills, gain confidence, and grow as a future nurse.
My clinical experiences across the Central Valley have shaped my development significantly. While I initially thought that pediatrics would be my primary focus, adult health rotations had the most impact on me. Working with adult patients allowed me to communicate directly and form meaningful connections while understanding their health experiences. Rotating through diverse communities strengthened my commitment to serving multicultural populations, and being bilingual in English and Spanish enables me to connect effectively with patients. This portfolio highlights my academic work, clinical experiences, and personal growth, demonstrating the skills, knowledge, and dedication that I will bring to nursing practice.
