Beam Therapeutics
01.2023 - Current
  • Serving as the Biosafety Officer of Beam Therapeutics
  • Completed an audit of the organizations biosafety program identifying key deficiencies and generating corrective actions to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations
  • Effectively responded to two exposures to proprietary viral vectors, working with the Chief Scientific Officer and Chief Legal Counsel to communicate the events to the local department of public health. Completed incident investigation for each and generated corrective and preventative actions to mitigate future risk. Presented incident to the site EHS Steering Committee and across the site.
  • Developed and administered numerous biosafety training curriculums including Biosafety & Bloodborne Pathogens, Viral Vector, and Non-Human Primate trainings
  • Completed space planning for a new floor which included industry benchmarking and literature review of the risks associated with non-human primate materials to align with key stake holders on safety precautions resulting in the and the addition of six biological safety cabinets that were previously left off of planning details
  • Enhanced the organization's research efficiency by collaborating with Automation Department and implementing enclosures on automated liquid handlers and homogenizers to allow for work with higher-risk biologics which increased safety and flexibility of work
  • Generated and implemented a Biosafety Level 2+ manual detailing Roles and Responsibilities, minimum access requirements, training, engineering and administrative controls, and personal protective equipment
  • Identified deficiencies in previous biological protocol registration forms and designed and implemented a new document which allowed for increased ease and usability for principal investigators, researchers, and risk assessors
  • Produced Beam's first Institutional Biosafety Committee charter and onboarded Chief Scientific Officer as new IBC chair, providing training on the role and workings of the IBC
  • Learned Controlled Substances Regulations and became owner of the program, generating an enhanced training for stakeholders and successfully applied for 3 permits

Environmental Health and Safety Specialist, Biosafety Officer

Merck Sharp and Dohme
08.2020 - 01.2023
  • Served as Biosafety Officer for Merck Research Laboratories Boston and Cambridge, Massachusetts facilities with laboratories ranging from biosafety level 1 to biosafety level 2+
  • Organized and facilitated quarterly IBC meetings and member of the site IACUC
  • Member of the MRL & GVO Biosafety Team driving discussion and leading subcommittees of stakeholders from across the network in accomplishing corporate-driven goals including the generation of multiple guidance/training documents to increase ease of submission and quality of new biological protocols
  • Mentored a fellow from the NIH National Biosafety and Biocontainment Training Program for two weeks, reviewing the site Biosafety Program and specifically assessing approved CRISPR work
  • Generated a quantitative tool, in alignment with Merck corporate initiative, to aid in the prioritization of transfer of biological protocols to a new EHS software
  • Aided in the design of new biological safety level 2+ laboratory suite- specifically adhering to corporate standards while ensuring stakeholder needs were met from a safety perspective
  • System Owner of the following additional EHS programs: Hazardous Waste, Respiratory Protection, Wastewater, Air Emissions, Medical Surveillance
  • Winner of the 2021 Safety Award at the Merck Boston Site for contributions surrounding containment of OEB4 APIs.

Staff Scientist

Environmental Health and Engineering
07.2018 - 08.2020
  • Consultant responsible for managing three biomedical organization’s biosafety programs, including serving as biosafety officer of a biosafety level 3 facility
  • Provided biosafety subject matter expertise to in-house consultants to create a more well-rounded life sciences consulting team
  • Worked with key stakeholders to generate new safety procedures for working with live, isolated SARS-CoV-2, including routine diagnostic testing for researchers, and enhanced personal protective equipment
  • Identified deficiencies in donning and doffing procedures at a biosafety level 3 facility and worked with researchers to create and align on new procedures
  • Collaborated with researchers to generate a novel kill-assay to demonstrate risk group 3 viral inactivation prior to waste leaving the biosafety level 3 containment facility
  • Developed a biological risk assessment form, employed at multiple clients, to facilitate increased safety, compliance, and stakeholder buy-in
  • Consulted on the reuse of N95 respirators during the COVID-19 pandemic for an organization collaborating operations with the State of Massachusetts
