Summary
Ever since I was 8 years old, I knew that I wanted to be a teacher. Losing my mother at such a young age was difficult, school became my safe place and enabled me to thrive despite the challenges I faced early on in life. Due to this adversity, I knew early on in life that I wanted to become that safe place for others. Therefore, I became a teacher. Education is more than a career for me, it is the opportunity to impact lives and influence the world. As Nelson Mandela proclaims, “education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” With this premise in mind, I value education through multiple faucets. I understand the importance of cultural diversity within education, and I wish to explore my teaching repertoire among other cultures in the world.
Currently, I’m a 3rd grade teacher in a diverse, American school community. In addition to that, I am actively pursuing a master’s degree in teaching English as a foreign language (TESOL). In 2015, I graduated with my bachelor’s degree in education with an endorsement in literacy. Immediately following graduation, I joined the Peace Corps where I was teaching English in West Java, Indonesia at the secondary level. Helping to educate and acclimate these students has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life to date. Teaching English in Indonesia has inspired me to expand my interests in the field of education and teaching abroad. I wish to continue teaching among other astounding cultures.
One of my areas of study and practice is in language and literacy. I have worked with ESL (English as a Second Language) students in the local refugee community in Boise, Idaho. Over ⅓ of the students at Jefferson are refugees, speaking nearly 20 different languages and arriving from 30 different countries. The cultural diversity that exists at my current school is one of the many reasons why I love teaching there. From the students who speak several languages to those that only know English, diversity brings us together. It is because of this diversity that I have chosen a career in teaching English as a foreign language.
