I have had many service experiences that have influenced my work ethic. This past summer I was fortunate enough to build a school in Ghana where I learned the value of working for what you want. I now realize the importance of good communication because of the accent barrier I experienced while on the worksite! I have also been to Mexico on a dental humanitarian trip where I learned how lucky I truly am to have access to such good healthcare and education as well as the importance of being able to listen and understand the patients. My brother and I were able to translate some of the Spanish that was said into to a way the doctors could understand! While in high school I had the honor of working with and learning from the Special Ed students in various classes. Taking care of them was one of the greatest highlights of my high school career. I was in charge of helping them with many tasks, making sure they were understood, and communicating with them in many ways, including minimal ASL, sounds, eye contact, and writing it out! I also have had the opportunity of serving a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Ecuador for the last 18 months! I lived amongst the people and had the privilege of learning Spanish to communicate with them. I met so many people and have broaden my appreciation for everything I have since.
