Hi! My name is Betsy Giorgi, and I am a third year student at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities! I am double majoring in Youth Studies and Family Social Science with a concentration in Family Therapy, and a minor in Social Justice! I am extremely passionate about helping people, especially youth, find their voices to help stand up for inequities in our world today.
At the Emily Program, I get to work alongside clients who live with eating disorders. During my day, I get to support clients as they go throughout their day of treatment . I am there to support, encourage, and monitor eating disorder behaviors. Being a Behavioral Health Technician has continued to teach me that everyone has their own story and their own needs as they go throughout the Emily Program, and life in general.
I am part of President's Emerging Scholars at the University of Minnesota, and I work as a Peer Mentor for the program. President's Emerging Scholars is a program for typically underserved students who have leadership and strong academic achievements. I am privileged to work with and mentor around 20 incoming freshmen as they navigate their first year of college. I am there to help academically, personally, and any other way that I can.
At Fraser, I was privileged to work alongside children from 4-6 who have an Autism diagnosis or working towards one. Working 1:1 with these children has taught me so much about working with both children and special mental health needs. The experience I have gained at Fraser has taught me so much about everyone's individual needs and how to accommodate those as needed.
I have nannied for a few different families in the St. Paul area. The children have ranged from 3-8, and I have gained a lot of amazing experience with different behaviors of children and learning to work with them in different ways that will fit their personality and learning types and abilities. Being able to connect with children and help them navigate their early childhood years has been a privilege and a great experience.
Being a nanny involved things like taking care of the kids and their needs, keeping the house clean, driving kids to sports and activities, making meals/snacks, and overall keeping the children's lives moving smoothly.
Being promoted to Manager at Skyzone was an amazing experience and taught me so much in order to grow into a new position. During my time as manager, I managed and motivated employees to be productive and engaged in work, maintained a professional and organized enviornment for employees, and resolved staff member conflicts, listening to concerns and finding appropriate middle ground.
Being a Team Member at SkyZone brought me a lot of variety and a lot of difference experiences. I was trained as a court monitor, rock climbing supervisor, cashier, and party host, and eventually became a manager. As a team member, I was responsible for keeping areas clean, organized, and safe as people of all ages came in to use the facility. SkyZone taught me how to accommodate people's needs and create a fun, safe environment for anyone.
At Lifetime, I was fortunate enough to work with a wide variety of children, their ages ranging from 3 months to 11 years old. During this time, I was able to support the children's emotional and social development by encouraging positive self-concepts and understanding of others. I also communicated with their parents about behavior, daily activities, and other concerns. I also was there to help the transition for the children from being with their parents to coming into the childcare center. Each child is so incredibly different and each deserves a style of teaching and caring that is fit for them.

I am fortunate enough to be part of the Youth Studies Student Co-op at the University of Minnesota. As a team, we work together to get information out to fellow Youth Studies Majors, and work alongside faculty to help solve and come up with solutions to situations going on within the department. We also organize events for inside of our major, and it is a great way to connect with other Youth Studies majors and work with others as a team.
