While working for Granite Construction, I got more hands-on training using a variety of hand, power, and pneumatic tools such as jackhammers, shovels, axe's as well as compactors to chip/break concrete as well as asphalt while also compacting dirt. I would conduct daily site inspections to identify potential safety hazards. Inspected tools and equipment to maintain safety and efficiency. I am familiar with getting dispatched and working as a team player with a crew on different tasks while under the supervision of a crew leadman or supervisor as well as being sent individually to perform in a precise manner. While not on job sites or engaged directly on tasks, I Inspected, cleaned and reconditioned tools and equipment to maintain safety and efficiency. I also work on training my body physically and exercise my mind in classroom technical training to attain new skills to apply and advance my knowledge in the relatable field of subject.
Being one of the first of many labor intensive jobs I have had, working as a Vineyard hand, as well as landscaper has helped me learn various skills that I can apply and help further my career in Wildland Fire. Working 10 hours a day, 5 days out of the week, I worked with a crew of 6-8 people to help maintain the vineyard in preparation for harvest season. Used various hand tools as well as power tools such as chainsaws, weed whackers, shovels, and hoes to help cut down small trees/branches or move dirt and soil to plant new grapes all while using proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). My Interest in Wildland fire sparked when the Drum Fire on HWY 246 happened just across from the vineyard I was working at which Burned 696 acres. Due to this Fire, using shovels and hoes we dug a defensible space while chopping up brush and removing all fuels from the surface around the vineyard in accordance with county fire codes.
