Park Maintenance Worker

  • After the spring ‘23 semester at OU, I wanted to work a second job and began working a seasonal job as a Park Maintenance worker at the Wolcott division at the Huron-Clinton Metroparks
  • I have spent 3 summers working there, ‘22, ‘23, ‘24, and potentially ’25
  • I learned a lot about what I value in an occupation as well as a lot of tasks and skills, some I was versed in, and a couple of new ones
  • Using large equipment such as bat wing mowers, front end loader tractors, back-hoes
  • Maintenance on trucks and mowers
  • Using chainsaws, hedge trimmers, pole saws, weedwhackers
  • Plotting out where we needed concrete, laying the forums for concrete as well as finishing it
  • Coordinating tasks and just planning out the day and what needs to be done
  • Transporting equipment that was needed elsewhere in the park

  • After leaving Kroger I decided that with my experience with skating that I decided to become a USA Hockey Official
  • Over those two and a half seasons I became more confident in my decisions, every decision had to be supported by the rule book
  • I had to always be able to communicate with my one other partner, and especially the players and coaches
  • Another aspect to the job is reaching out to various schedulers as well as building a solid reputation with the schedulers

  • I was given a walk-in interview at the Kroger in my hometown, where I was a courtesy clerk, where I would bag groceries, occasionally help people unload their groceries, keep the store neat and presentable, being a friendly and welcoming presence for the customers
