JOB SUMMARY:
Crew Leader for Overhead and Underground lines. Designates employees working in the field in connection with the construction, operation, inspection and maintenance of transmission and distribution systems.
My career as a Lineman has shown me the path to becoming a super achiever. After 15 years on the line I've transitioned to a supervisory role in training as the Overhead Training Coordinator while maintaining my position in the union and working on the trucks. I enjoy learning and being hands on. Becoming one out of only two Training Coordinators for Eversource was a major milestone for myself and I'm very proud to hold this position.
In the past typical candidates were senior Lineman. It was a rough road being the youngest ever to be hired as the Coordinator. There was a lot of kickback from the senior craft workers who thought that I was under qualified for the job. That has since changed.
Once taking the position there were zero lineman that would take the three remaining training spots to join the new training facility. This left me alone to manage my first project as training coordinator guiding 18 new apprentices with under a year experience. We were executed as a training group to install a run of 6,000 ft 795ACSR (3) phase transmission lines that are a direct source of power to a substation from four separate solar farms. This was the first project of this kind in the area.
Training was most likely going to revert back to the local area work centers instead of the facility I train at now if we failed this mission. The company hired 2 outside contractors (old retires) to help out. I realized it was a dire situation and needed to start implementing systems to help organize & launch the project.
We all worked in group flow finishing on time and under budget. Running projects like this and being able to obtain flow while training has sparked a desire to do more work at this scale regularly. The last few years of operating as coordinator has given me the leverage and knowledge needed to apply for a position like this.
I've recently created an online collective group of the apprentices I manage on ASANA that allows the tracking of training OJT books in real time by a qualified observer in the field. Implementing this program essentially automated a good part of my position. I consider this a milestone. The rush I felt when all of the apprentices were uploaded on one platform together as group was incredible.
The company shot it down because of financial reasons and the program was not approved. I continue to press for some sort of digital training/tracking program for our apprentices. The feedback I got while the program was in beta phase was life altering for me and our union is still trying to get approval if the company can't produce an online system.
This all aligns with my passions and purpose in life to work for a company that strives to become the best by using group flow towards a common goal. SPACE!
Practicing the chunk method to accomplish goals has freed up valuable headspace making me a better professional leader both in the field and at the executive level. I wouldn't be applying to Space X if I didn't feel I have something great to offer. Challenging what is capable of self will indeed fuel what it takes become an Electrical Power Launch Engineer for Space X.
