UCI was a natural gas utility contractor that specialized in the installation of gas pipeline. Sometimes it was just a simple repair of underground gas lines, installation of a new gas service to a home or business, or adding a new pipeline from the street service to a new development. At this job there was a lot of hand digging. Assisting the machine operators with trenching. Preparing the trenches for pipelines using compactors. Installing copper wire when plastic pipe was used. Installing special caution tape that warned future workers that a gas line is below. This company took a lot of pride in its workers and machinery. They were constantly doing preventative maintenance and servicing their equipment witch I took part in. This set me in the right direction for future jobs because I taught me the importance of taking care of the equipment on the jobs.
Tires: changed tires, tire rotations, fixed flats, and tire balancing.
Wheel alignments, before a vehicle received an alignment, the front suspension in their various complaints or checked out for ware and tear. Parts were replaced like tie rods idler arms and Pitman arms
Lube: oil changes and Chassis lubes. All vehicles went through a quick safety inspection looking under hood, underneath the vehicle, and on the outside of the vehicle checking things like belts and hoses, anything that looked out of the ordinary. Underneath the vehicle a quick inspection of the break and suspension part. On the outside we're looking at windshield wipers and lights.
Brakes: pad and shoe replacement, rotor and drum resurfacing or replacement, and parking brake cable replacement.
Tire changing and balancing. Fixing flats, installing tubes, and tire rotations. Some time after I got out of high school I became an alignment tech and went to the HUNTER ALIGNMENT SCHOOL. After training I became a floater and covered different stores when people were sick or on vacation until they placed me permanently at their Avon location.
