Low Shrinkage Mix Designs to Reduce Early Cracking of Concrete Bridge Decks, Bridge Decks in South Dakota were not meeting their 20-year service life from premature deterioration. The South Dakota Department of Transportation authorized this study in order to develop new mix designs and curing methods to prevent premature shrinkage cracking of their concrete bridge decks., Eric Simonton, 02/01/21, Conducted a nationwide survey where 33 state DOT agencies participated, Analyzed over 40 different mix design and dozens of curing techniques, Developed 18 concrete, 10 mortar, and 10 paste mixes for testing, Developed a final mix design, where testing showed over a 40% reduction in drying and autogenous shrinkage compared to the current mix used by SDDOT, Three-semester long project completed in February 2021, mix design and curing recommendations passed final board in November 2021, mix implemented spring 2022
