Volunteers time with various aspects of the SPURS (Super People Using Riding Skills) program, including but not limited to: grooming horses, assisting riders, and helping with events.

Safety:

• Practices safety rules. Asks questions when needed.
• Demonstrates proper tying of quick release knot.
• Can approach a horse properly in a stall, arena, and paddock.
• Can lead a horse safely. Can mentor others how to do so.

Grooming and Tacking:

• Grooms thoroughly and hoof picks correctly and safely.
• Can halter, saddle and bridle. Can properly check tack, loosen and tighten cinch.
• Learned how and when to use sport and bell boots.
• Knows basic feeding protocols.

Teaching and Mentoring:

• Recognizes proper helmet fit. Mentors others on how to properly fit.
• Adjusts stirrups correctly. Mentors others how to do so.
• Lead/Mentors horse centered sessions.

Horsemanship:

• Can ride at a walk showing a reverse, circle, and diagonal across an arena. Learning to trot.
• Demonstrates correct holding of the reins and proper lengthening.
• Knows how and when to perform an emergency stop.
• Trail confident
• Shows empathy for horses. Looks for sings of lameness and other ailments.
