Despite a niche education following High School, I know how to work in a restaurant. I worked 3 years at an upscale restaurant, and received promotions every year I was there. Also my career in woodworking, although not directly related to restaurant work, has many skills that carry over, including organization, cooperation with other employees, and the ability to work confidently when under a time-crunch.

  • I started at the Chophouse as a busser. I had the usual responsibilities, including cleaning and resetting tables, rearranging tables for large parties, bringing dishes to the back for cleaning, and basically filling the gaps on any small tasks like that.
  • After a year of bussing, I was promoted to food runner. I kept a lot of responsibilities from bussing, but gained running food to tables, communicating with customers about anything they may need when the servers weren't there, and then communicating those things to the servers.
  • Then, after less than a year of food running, I was promoted again to the expediter. I was now responsible for organizing all the salads, appetizers, entrées, and sides, and ensuring that they all made it to the right tables at the appropriate times. Typically, I would also have to pick up the slack of food runners and bring food to tables.
  • I was being considered for a promotion to server after a year of expediting, but left to start my current job.

Furniture Maker/ Fabricator

  • The company makes a wide variety of furniture. Chairs, beds, cabinets, desks, etc. are all pieces we make.
  • The headquarters in New York handles the business side and also creates the drawings/plans on which we base the pieces. Then the plans are sent to our shop in Pittsfield, NH, where my colleagues and I, along with three other guys, do all of the engineering and fabricating. Then the work is sent back to New York where finish gets applied to them.
  • My responsibilities are fabricating the furniture, combined with general housekeeping and upkeep that is required for a woodshop (cleaning, tool maintenance, filling the pellet stove, etc.).
