I am a charge nurse and staff nurse. When I’m in staffing my role encompasses caring for 6 patients made up of newly delivered moms and babies. I monitor the mother for signs/symptoms of postpartum complications such as excessive bleeding, infection, or abnormal vital signs. I assist with breastfeeding and educate on care of the infant. I monitor the infant for appropriate transition to “life” essentially. Making sure they are maintaining normal vital signs such as stable temp, and appropriate cardiac and respiratory status. Additionally they are able to eat to stabilize their blood sugar, and they are able to void and stool.

As a charge nurse I am responsible for being a resource for the nurses on the floor. I make assignments for the following shift making sure to balance the acuity and tasks on their shift. I also assign delivered moms and babies to the nurses on my shift as they deliver. Again trying to keep the acuity even and manageable, spreading out the patients with higher acuity to keep one nurse from having too many things going on at once.

• Balancing home visits and phone calls to follow up for progress.
• Working with first time moms to educate them during pregnancy and delivery and give support along the way.
• Partnering with the mom/family until baby is 2 years old, assisting with monitoring development and milestones and ensuring proper care for mom and baby.
• Helping improve family economic self-sufficiency.

• Most triage calls were for pediatric patients, on occasion it would be for the geriatric population.
• Returned calls in the que in the order they were received to assess and evaluate the need for immediate care, education and follow up care, or just reassurance and support for families.
• Called in prescriptions as warranted based on an algorithm we followed based on the nature and acuity of the call/situation.
• Made appointments for follow up care if patient needed seen within 24-48 hours.
• Called ahead to emergency departments if parents were bringing in children with acute concerns.
• Made follow up calls for the patients that were sent for immediate care to check in and answer questions and offer support and education if needed.
