Hello! My name is Erin Murphy, and I am a Sophomore and a political science major here at UMW. I'm a firm believer that people are inherently good, and I think teaching people how to debate respectfully will help us all see that we are all trying to do the best we can for society, even if that looks different for different people.

Club Member
9 Months- Assisted with mulching the nature trail
- Heavily researched the impacts of fast fashion and created a presentation on fast fashion impacts, as well as providing solutions to the problem that were accessible to high school students
- Coordinated two sewing workshop events with my environmental teacher to teach students how to salvage old clothes
- Taught students basic sewing stitches to a class of about 20 people
- Provided necessary materials for the event, such as sewing thread, needles, thrifted fabrics, and cotton stuffing
- Researched and presented another presentation on the impacts of American farming practices on the planet
Speaker
6 Months- Practiced Braver Campus Conversations-style debates in class to get familiar with the procedures
- Researched the debate topic beforehand to be more informed
- Contributed to the conversation through my personal experiences related to the debate topic, even if I felt underprepared
- Responded to questions after my speech to the best of my ability, but openly admitted when I didn't know an answer
- Asked questions to other speakers to keep conversations moving
- Talked to coordinators after the debate ended to build relationships
- Debated further with friends after the debate finished out of curiosity
GCC Choral Ensemble Director
8 Months- Managed a choir of 12 students into 4-part harmonies
- Held club votes over preferred music pieces for the semester, ordered sheet music, and organized binders for sheet music
- Taught choral skills such as reading music, matching pitch, tone, and dynamics to beginner singers
- Set up a repertoire of 2 songs to perform at a winter concert
- Coordinated with the Germanna SGA to perform our music at the "First Steps to Glory" concert
- Conducted the choir singers and piano accompanist in 3/4 and 4/4
- Scheduled regular club meeting times, dress rehearsals, and concert call times
- Communicated with club members via Gmail

6 Months- Assisted with SGA-hosted events such as "Welcome Day," the "Spooky Fest," and the "First Steps to Glory" concert
