I'm an empathetic caregiver with an unconditional positive regard. I've worked in a variety of settings that require patience, listening and communication. My primary goal is to compassionately provide support to those who I can offer it to.
As dispatchers, we would engage in consistently high-stress scenarios focusing on providing resources and various forms of care for people in need across campus while simultaneously communicating with officers. I frequently answered mental health-related phone calls and talked with people who had been attacked or attempted suicide while on duty. Since working here, I've learned how to de-escalate tense situations, remain calm in high pressure, handle sensitive information responsibly, operate specialized equipment, form intentional questions, maintain situational awareness, multitask (often taking notes, while on call and relaying information), and offer consolation. What I'm proudest of accomplishing in my time at Hamline Public Safety is my efforts to foster a healthier community within the workplace. Being in that office can be intense so I was very intentional about instilling positivity and healthy boundaries among my coworkers.
Counselors look after children of various ages 24 hours a day, 6 days a week, engaging with them safely in various scenarios. The primary focus of the counselor is to provide fun experiences for the kids but they also serve the roles of mediator and temporary caregiver as they navigate the conflicts and needs of the kids throughout the weeks they live with them. As staff, we regularly collaborated to organize and implement activities fostering social and emotional growth through constructive guidance. I'll always be proud of my work here because all of our staff had been positive role models for these kids as we facilitated kindness, communication skills, and healthy habits/attitudes. This job takes both diligence and compassion as we're responsible for handling sensitive situations while offering these kids the best summer of their lives.
I worked the Central Service Desk for the majority of my time at Hamline University. Here, we act as the hub for information, customer service and IT support for the school. For the library, I would organize, catalogue and manage books, documents and other materials while researching and updating information for patrons. As an IT technician, I would take calls and answer tickets regarding internet and technology issues across campus. I would resolve minor issues over the phone with articulate and comprehensive communication but larger issues would require me to make contact with patrons and handle directly. By the end of my time here, I had become a mentor to new employees to foster the same skills I had developed.
While lifeguarding, I would watch over a range of 30-100 kids as they swam or kayaked in a lake. I have successfully performed four rescues and provided first aid to those that have need support. As lifeguards, we assisted and engaged with the kids in aquatic activities with both friendliness and authoritative guidance as we facilitate both fun and safety. This job requires active listening and diligent monitoring and ability to educate and enforce safety.
I worked for the school newspaper as a columnist and journalist. This job required an awareness of what occurred on campus and a consideration of students as an audience. I have written stories, news updates, movie reviews, and more. Working with the staff and students across campus has helped me develop communication and writing skills as I attempted to succinctly and responsibly relay recapitulated information to the public.
