Marine Science Technicians (MSTs) conduct marine safety activities such as investigating pollution incidents, monitoring pollution cleanups, conducting foreign-vessel boarding to enforce pollution and navigation safety laws, conducting harbor patrols for port safety and security, and inspecting waterfront facilities. MSTs are also the Coast Guard's safety and environmental health experts ashore. At sea, MSTs are assigned to the Coast Guard icebreaking fleet and receive advanced training in weather and oceanography to provide support to scientists conducting research from Coast Guard icebreakers. Inspects, records, and analyzes maritime pollution and clean-up efforts; evaluates, interprets, and enforces Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) and International Maritime laws associated with commercial waterfronts; identifies and plans responses to maritime security threats; prepares, maintains, and evaluates marine accident and incident reports; conducts, inspects, and guides HAZMA T and oil clean-up efforts; and conducts shipboard inspections and prepares reports.
