Water Operation Mechanic
Portland Water Bureau
Portland
06.2015 - 09.2018
Basic mechanical operations as a utility worker apprentice and water operation mechanic. Currently, as a mechanic, my experience applying knowledge of basic mechanical operations includes repairing leaks in mains and services, caulking joints, repairing valves, taping mains, and cutting pipes, to name a few.
I am experienced in repairing, killing, relocating, and installing fire hydrants, fire lines, and services to WB standards. I have knowledge using precision instruments, such as the colorimeter, high and mid-range testers, flow meter for controlled inlet C/T for disinfection, and sniffer for atmospheric testing for confined space entry.
In addition to repairing and adding assets to the distribution system with my good judgment and initiative, I inspect work performed by semi-skilled personnel to ensure that the work is performed correctly and safely per OSHA compliance and standards, City of Portland SOP, engineered blueprint, AWWA standards, and Department of Health Division. Water Distribution Certification Level 1 gives me the knowledge to perform work per federal regulations and procedures.
Communication skills are practiced daily while communicating the status of tasks in the field with utility workers, automotive equipment operators, construction equipment operators, and concerned customers or neighborhood citizens with concerns, as well as contractors and project managers about the planning and completion of our work. I am able to verbalize mechanical and technical processes and procedures, job site specifics, and safety-related communication while promoting teamwork and actively participating as a team member and leader.
Mathematical calculations are used when chlorination is needed for new mains, and the slug method is used for large mains to meet the OHA standard for disinfection C/T standard. Calculating the volume of water in the shutdown to determine how long I will be pumping before the repairs can be made, especially for large mains. Also used when connecting two offset mains together to get the proper pipe nipple length, to minimize break out of a joint.
Read and follow instructions that are performed daily; work orders, locate tickets, blueprints, quarter section maps, and survey stakes. Writing simple reports on work performed, and drawing an as-built drawing with accuracy. This includes, but is not limited to, reading DOT requirements as a CDL driver and meeting them for safe roadway transportation, emergency response guides for hazardous chemical spills and responses, OSHA compliance and standards, City of Portland SOPs, engineered blueprints, AWWA standards, and federal regulations for the Safe Drinking Water Act.
Being a competent employee on the job holds me responsible for all safety issues and concerns. If there are any locate concerns, I communicate them to the Construction Equipment Operator and Dispatch to ensure locates are accurate for the safety of all employees before work is performed. I also communicate at the end of the day with the supervisor about the duties completed that day, and what work still needs to be performed to help set up for the next day.
Water Distribution Level 1 certification, Class A CDL with Hazmat and Tanker endorsements, OSHA Construction 30-hour class, confined space, Public Agency Work Zone training, and Competent Person Training for excavation safety.
As a water operations mechanic, I do daily timesheets for my crew using the laptop assigned to me. Time is tracked through the Water Bureau Dashboard. Water Bureau Dashboard and Synerg are also how I look up work orders and other work order information. Completed work orders for projects or daily work are completed in the InfoPath program. The GIS map is used to retrieve information for Water Bureau assets.
Knowledge of leadership, good judgment, initiative, the ability to communicate, and work as a team in stressful situations, and the ability to improvise in a stressful situation to accomplish the mission, whatever it may be. I have experience and am confident that I can schedule, plan, communicate with other work groups, and assign work. I am confident in my ability to continue in such a capacity, as it is specific to the Water Bureau and city-specific strategies, assuring adherence to administrative and human resources rules, and labor contractual agreements.
Ability to apply the standards, policies, and procedures that govern occupational safety and health practices as they specifically relate to the construction industry and in providing clean drinking water.
