I like fixing things. Before proofreading and editing have been performed, a document suggests a cluster of 0000, the finest grade of steel wool, perfect for polishing or applying a final coat of wax to antique furniture, but impenetrable to the naked eye. During the proofreading and editing process, my goal is to take that opaque scratchy bundle of metal shavings and delicately tease it out, then stretch it to an inconceivable degree of tenuity and transparency to fashion a diaphanous spider web of deceptive strength, designed to capture the eye—or the fly and keep it. Even that 0000 steel wool, perfect for lending a shine to a finished product, is not designed to catch the eye. If it does, bad things happen and your day is ruined by a visit to the local ER or eye clinic. I produce spider webs from clumps of abrasive fur.
