  • TITLE: Training Specialist – Human Resources
  • GENERAL SUMMARY:
  • Under the supervision of the Human Resources Manager, I assists with the implementation and coordination of the system-wide training program for all employees.
  • ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Develops and conducts periodic training needs assessments of all employees; Compiles and reviews results with HR Manager and Library Department/Branch Managers. Assists in the development and design of training modules for each position within the library, with input from respective Library Department/Branch Managers. Coordinates and/or conducts employee training sessions including arranging for instructors, scheduling employee training sessions and maintaining employee training records. Creates handouts, handbooks and other training materials as needed. Assists in monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of employee training programs Assists with conducting, maintaining and updating the new employee orientation program. Maintains employee training files. Tracks and reports on employee training attendance. Monitors spend-down of allocated training funds and keeps the HR Manager informed through regular reports. Assists with the coordination of Staff Development Day activities. Maintains awareness of developments and trends in the profession through in-service workshops, meetings, conferences, professional literature and organizational memberships, as needed.

  • QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university. Minimum of two years’ experience in adult education/employee development preferred. Knowledge of adult training techniques, needs assessment techniques and organizational development strategies. Public library experience helpful. Knowledge and experience in using computers and various software programs.
  • KNOWLEDGE AND PROBLEM-SOLVING ABILITIES REQUIRED:
  • Knowledge of or ability to acquire knowledge of library policies and procedures, adult training techniques, organizational development strategies and needs assessment techniques. Defines problems, collects data, establishes facts and draws valid conclusions. Classifies and organizes records. Identifies future needs and develops plans to meet them.
  • INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT REQUIRED:
  • While under the direct supervision of the Human Resources Manager, I set priorities and works independently. Ability to function independently as well as part of a team. Excellent time management skills and judgment to complete all assignments. Meets critical deadlines. Ability to determine the most appropriate and cost-effective tools and means of instruction.
  • INTERPERSONAL SKILLS REQUIRED:
  • Very high degree of interpersonal skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public, including tact to handle sensitive matters. Must be able to interact and respond appropriately to staff. Highly effective verbal and written communication skills and presentation skills. Exhibit good listening skills. Ability to organize, prioritize and coordinate multiple tasks. Ability to create, compose and edit written training materials.
  • EFFORT REQUIRED:
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule and travel to all system locations, as well as appropriate workshops/training. Valid Ohio Driver’s License. Frequent periods of intense concentration, attention to detail and accuracy. Ability to handle the mental/physical strain involved in the use of printed materials, computer screens, preparing statistics, reports. Moderate manual dexterity for basic keyboard work.

TITLE: Library Associate – Children’s

  • PAY GRADE: 5 Hourly
  • GENERAL SUMMARY:
  • Under the regular supervision of the Children’s Department Manager, this employee provides direct library service to children (ages 0 – 12) and other library users at the Warren library location. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Answers reference and reader’s advisory questions. Prepares and presents story times and other programs. Develops displays, fliers, and other promotional materials. Instructs users individually and in groups in the use of library materials and equipment. Presents information about library services and programs to individuals and groups. Assists with selection and weeding of juvenile materials. Participates in outreach activities as assigned. Develops and maintains a working knowledge of childhood brain development and developmentally appropriate practice.
  • ADDITIONAL EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:
  • Performs clerical duties as assigned. Monitors use of computers in the Children’s Department. Participates in in-service training, attends meetings and workshops as required. Creates a variety of forms, documents, files, etc., using various computer software programs. May help cover the teen services desk at the Warren library location. Participates in other Youth Services programming as assigned.
  • QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university required, with an emphasis in education or related field highly desirable. One-year experience working with children and preparing/presenting programs required. Knowledge and experience in using computers and various software programs to include the Internet and online databases. Valid driver’s license.
  • KNOWLEDGE AND PROBLEM-SOLVING ABILITIES REQUIRED:
  • Ability to learn computer operation and use of on-line circulation system. Some knowledge of children’s literature desirable. Analytical ability to interpret and respond to reference questions with materials appropriate to the needs and abilities of the user.
  • INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT REQUIRED:
  • Often may work unsupervised on occasion. Ability to determine appropriate time commitment to specific user requests. Ability to make service decisions within policy guidelines. Independent judgment is required to determine appropriate action to handle extraordinary situations.
  • INTERPERSONAL SKILLS REQUIRED:
  • Ability to communicate effectively with people of all ages, in groups and one-to-one, especially children. Previous experience interacting with children is necessary. Contact with the public is frequent. Must present a warm, welcoming image when working with the public.
  • EFFORT REQUIRED:
  • Considerable mobility for moving around the library when providing public service. Some agility and flexibility for retrieving materials and conducting programs. Occasional transporting of book totes and similar weights up to 40 lbs. Must be able to use computers and computer equipment; FAX and photocopy equipment; answer telephone; and assist customers who may have any type of disability. Must be able to accommodate a flexible schedule which may include evenings and weekends. Must be able to concentrate on the task at hand, regardless of distractions. Requires alertness to customer needs. Must be able to travel off site to present programs.
