My name is Fred Townsend Jr. and I have been a Varying Exceptionalities teacher for twenty plus years. I come from a family of educators with both of my parents being educators as well as my wife, daughter and sister. I consider myself to be highly professional and passionate at what I do, in regards to teaching. The class creed for my students and I is "Be the Best". I expect my students as well as myself to always strive to be the best at what we do and when its not possible, then just try. I was also named Teacher of the Year at Washington Shores Elementary in 2004. That was the year my father had passed away. I credit him with my tireless work ethic and my attention to detail. This is something that I try to pass along to my students as well. As an educator I have always believed that our profession is similar to agriculture. In this case the mind of a child is like a seed that needs to be nurtured with love and care. Like most seeds, the mind of a child grows at different rates so everyone is not going to learn at the same pace. As an educator, I believe it is important to ensure my students receive highly effective instructions to produce the academics gains necessary for success At the high school level, I would like to help create future leaders and successful citizens that will be needed for future generations to come. I realize that some of my former students are now students at Jones High School. To be able to help them realize their dream of succeeding in life is something I would love to do. I believe all of my students can see and feel how much I care about them. I never disparage my students or make them feel as if they can't accomplish anything. For me, its the complete opposite. I try to instill in my students a belief that they can do anything they set their minds on to do.
My duties at Washington Shores Elementary consist of creating and Implementing Individualized Educational Plans for my E.S.E. students. I also provided small group instructions for my students as well. I currently teach reading, math and social skills. In addition, I track my students progress of their IEP goals and provide the results each nine weeks in their progress report. During my tenure as the Varying Exceptionalities Teacher, I was afforded the opportunity to serve as Behavioral Specialist for the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 school year. As the Behavioral Specialist I was in charge of providing resources for the General Ed. teachers in order for them to regulate their students behaviors. I was also responsible for tracking students behaviors with a series of behavior charts. I would then in turn graph the consequent data. I have also consistently been graded as Highly Effective for most of my time at Washington Shores Elementary. My unofficial duties would include being the back up Dean for our school. I would answer the call to address any students displaying unacceptable behaviors at the school.
