During my ongoing tenure as a research scholar at Mayo Clinic, Florida in the Department of Qualitative Health Sciences. I have been actively participating in research articles under the guidance of my professor Dr. Antwi. Moreover, I am gaining clinical experience in terms of conducting comprehensive history and physical examinations by rotating through the Division of Internal Medicine and the Division of Critical Care. Collaborating with residents, attending physicians and my colleague, I learned evidence-based patient management approaches with active participation in didactics. I have recently participate in poster presentation of my research article on pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor future projection up to 2040 in Mayo Clinic Research Fellow Association Day. This opportunity at Mayo Clinic has significantly improved my clinical Knowledge, communication skills, research experience and overall professionalism.
My time as a tutor for medical students preparing for the USMLE Step 1 board exam was truly rewarding. I got to help students remotely and support them in their journey to success. My main goal as a tutor was to assist the students in doing well on the challenging USMLE Step exams. During our tutoring sessions, I actively encouraged the students to participate. I believed that engaging in the learning process was crucial for effective understanding and remembering of medical information. So, I motivated them to ask questions, share their thoughts, and have active discussions about difficult medical topics. This interactive and dynamic approach made learning enjoyable and helped the students grasp complex concepts better. As a medical professional, I strongly believe in creating a positive learning environment that positively impacts medical students, residents, and patients fostering growth. I'm excited to support and motivate future medical professionals.
I have gained valuable experience as an Emergency Medicine Physician at a Governmental Hospital in my hometown. During my 24-hour shifts, I work tirelessly to carefully assess patients and create comprehensive treatment plans for different medical conditions. Throughout my time at the hospital, I have successfully stabilized and managed critically ill patients, dealing with conditions including acute decompensated chronic liver disease, acute exacerbation of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, hypertensive crisis, acute abdomen etc. Moreover, I noticed a concerning trend in my community where patients were frequently misinformed due to a lack of communication and education during their hospital stays. To address this issue, I took the initiative to organize and lead a continued medical education program for the medical staff, physicians, and administration. Additionally, this experience has allowed me to develop leadership skills and advocate for patients' rights.
During my research trainee program, I developed proficiency in formulating research questions, conducting literature reviews, and selecting appropriate study designs, including sampling techniques and sample size calculations for reliable data collection. During the program, I learned about the importance of doing research ethically and also learned to make informed consent forms and research proposals to ensure responsible and ethical research. I also learned to handle variables and create study tools using Kobo Toolbox. I received extra training in planning data collection and correctly importing and cleaning data. Additionally, the program taught me about referencing using Zotero, preparing a manuscript for publication, as well as interpreting and analyzing the data.
As a pre-residency extern, I took a detailed history, conducted comprehensive general and systemic physical examinations, and made assessments and plans for my patients and presented cases to my attending doctor. I actively participated in discussing the diagnostic test results with my attending doctors and I correlated diagnostic tests with patient clinical status. I used my clinical knowledge to teach my patient in simple understandable language with empathy. I took ten patients per day and updated their detailed notes in the care-cloud Electronic Medical Records system. Additionally, I also got the opportunity to observe diagnostic and interventional left heart catheterization in Ascension St John Hospital, Detroit, and learned the impact of intravenous ultrasonography and drug-eluting stents on patients with coronary artery disease.
As an Internal Medicine physician, I took detailed patient history and comprehensive physical examinations. I admitted patients from the emergency medicine department and provided internal medicine consultations on various department floors. I documented thorough patient notes with assessments and plans, presenting them to attending physicians and discussing the clinical status in detail to determine further management plans. I established and led a team consisting of nurses, physician assistants, and other house staff members to deliver coordinated and compassionate care by creating an exuberant work environment through didactics and educational sessions. I learned and performed hands-on clinical procedures, including endotracheal intubations, central venous catheter insertions, peritoneal tapping's, peripheral venous line placements, arterial and venous blood withdrawals, suturing and wound dressings, Foley catheter insertions, and focused assessments and sonography for trauma scans.
As active member of our organization, I actively participated in a community outreach program by organizing Deusi-Bhailo cultural programs to raise funds for patients who cannot afford their healthcare. I conducted health camps and provided first-aid training programs to local residents. I focused on community awareness of hygiene and health through various campaigns, such as Hand washing campaign on October 15 every year, Environment Day campaigns on June 5, breastfeeding campaigns from August 1 to August 7, and blood donation campaigns aimed at collecting blood for patients in need. Moreover, I was also involved in earthquake relief campaigns to provide basic support to people who were affected by the devastating earthquake of 2015.
During my Internship in the Internal Medicine department, I rotated through various sub-specialties including pulmonary and sleep medicine, cardiology, hepatobiliary and gastroenterology, nephrology, infectious disease and the Intensive care unit. I actively participated in these rotations by taking detailed histories and conducting comprehensive physical examinations which help me to formulate differential diagnoses. I recommended relevant necessary investigations to narrow down our differential diagnosis to ensure accurate management plans. Throughout my rotation, I performed intravenous cannulations, nasogastric tube insertions, bladder
catheterizations, wound dressing and suturing. Additionally, I assisted in central venous catheter insertions, chest tube insertions, endotracheal intubations, and assisted cardiopulmonary resuscitations in the intensive care unit. Furthermore, I maintained systematic documents of patients’ clinical records including their lab values and imaging.
During my assignment in the Internal Medicine department at a rural Primary Health Post in Dhading District, Nepal, I actively provided care to patients during a dengue epidemic, personally educating them about their diagnosis and offering supportive treatment. Recognizing the importance of community education, I recommended and successfully implemented an awareness program on dengue fever, ensuring that the local community understood the disease, its transmission, preventive measures, and the significance of timely medical care. Additionally, in collaboration with the administration of the local school, I conducted an awareness campaign on menstrual hygiene and hand hygiene, along with providing first aid training to students. These experiences enriched my dedication to patient education, community health promotion, and my commitment to improving healthcare outcomes in resource-limited settings
