Garrett Miller
Summary
I am a 4 year officer who has served some of Austin's most economically challenged neighborhoods to some of Austin's most wealthiest neighborhoods. In doing so I took pride in the service I was providing both populations. In Edward I had several great mentors that I looked up to. I wanted to pay it forward and be what they were to me, to the new officers hitting the streets. When I transitioned to David my mindset hadn't changed.
Outside of responding to calls for service I took pride in trying to learn the "dope game". I learned to treat my seizures of .1g as the same as my biggest seizure. I enjoy debriefs with my shift and trying to pick up new or better techniques when it came to any aspect of the stop or seizure. Due to my proactivity, willingness to learn/help, I have was lucky enough to help DEA on a traffic stop which resulted in the seizure of around $50,000. In that same day I was tasked with helping Officer Figueroa and a different DEA team with a residential search warrant that lead to the seizure of 433.9g of Cocaine along with the seizure of a large amount of cash and art pieces.
I have had a lot of fun on patrol when it comes to proactivity and the seizure of narcotics and or weapons. People like Officer Figueroa, Officer Hamilton, and Detective Strother were always helpful to me along with being a giant source of information. I would love nothing more than to be able to follow in their footsteps.
I look forward to furthering my opportunities to learn as both a student and as part of the Interdiction team.

- Here I responded to calls for service. I took pride in assigning to the "hot calls" and doing what I could either lead them or help PPOs handle them effectively.
- In my downtime I took time to work on my proactive skills. I would frequent David's high crime areas and make traffic stops.
- I found a niche in the hotels and game rooms in David where I was able to seize illegal narcotics, recover stolen vehicles, and apprehend wanted fugitives.
- David being slower paced than Edward allowed me to fine tune my roadside interview techniques.
- David also not being as saturated with crime as Edward, It forced me to slow down and really take in my surroundings when looking for people committing crime or concealing/transporting narcotics or weapons.
- David allowed me to network and work with units such as VCIU, South Metro, Robbery, 1800 K9s, DPS CID, as well as DEA.

- Edward allowed for me to learn and grow as a police officer rather quickly. I had plenty of mentors in Edward that I was able to learn from.
- Towards the end of my tenure in Edward I found fun in being proactive and interviewing people.
