I love hiking the hills and valleys of Clearfork Valley. I also love reading and researching the history of the area, and photographing the natural beauty of the area.
I have been a community volunteer for many years. Most of this time has been spent taking visiting students from various colleges and universities on tours of the valley, talking with them about the history of the area, showing them some of the natural beauty of the mountains and creeks, and answering any questions that they may have.
I was also a volunteer tutor for several years, helping adult non-readers to read. Several improved their reading skills, one went from a non-reader to reading above the eight grade level. I also helped adults obtain their General Education Diploma. I had to test each one and then design a plan of study so that they could reach their goal. I had 34 pass their tests in a period of two years. Some needed extensive tutoring while others just needed to be pointed in the right direction.
I was a member of the Duff Road Group whose goal was to get Campbell County to pave the Duff Road between White Oak and Hwy 25. My job was to speak at the county commission meetings, write articles, and to design a pamphlet informing the commission about particulate matter-what it is, where it comes from and the potential risks of being exposed. Each commissioner was given a copy as well as the mayor. Our group was successful in that we convinced them to contribute $110,000.00 the paving the road.
