Work History

Pulsed Power Engineer

General Atomics
01.2006 - Current

Chief engineer for design and test of compact, high-current pulsed power systems for EM launcher applications, including:

  • Solid-state 30 MJ High Energy Pulsed Power System (HEPPS) for GA Blitzer10 launcher, including field upgrade and operation at in challenging environment at Dugway Proving Ground, Utah.
  • 5 MA slip ring for 30 MJ railgun for Naval Surface Warfare Center, Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD), featuring novel pneumatic high-current brush packs
  • 9 MJ Mobile Pulser System (MPS) containerized, solid-state pulsed power system to drive Blitzer3 railgun at Dugway Proving Ground, Utah
  • Three 15 MJ pulsed power containers (45 MJ total) for Navy EM Railgun program, NSWC Dahlgren
  • 72 MJ Proof of Concept (PoC) solid-state pulsed power system for NSWCDD
  • Novel high-frequency solid-state pulsed power system for laboratory-scale linear induction launcher

Pulsed Power Engineer

Diehl-BGT Defence
01.2000 - 12.2005
  • Led small team of highly skilled engineers in design, fabrication, and test of compact repetitive high-power RF sources for potential RF weapon applications, including both single sources and arrays of time-synchronized transient sources at voltages of up to 2.4 MV.
  • Participated in numerous high-power effects tests of targets for German Ministry of Defence, including vehicles, MLRS launcher, anti-air and anti-ship missiles, and HAWK air defense system. Participated in Project MESA test at Los Alamos, USA in 2003, and counter-IED test at Yuma Proving Ground in 2004, both under contract to Lockheed Martin.

Research Scientist

Defence Science And Technology Organisation (DSTO)
06.1991 - 12.1999
  • Established and led a small team of engineers for development of high-power RF sources for High Power Microwave (HPM) effects testing, including Ship Survivability Enhancement Program (SSEP) collaborative test with the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) in 1994 to measure coupling of high-power electromagnetic pulses into a decommissioned destroyer escort provided by the Royal Australian Navy.
  • Led small team to conduct in-country evaluation of foreign HPM technology. Foreign equipment was demonstrated and evaluated in country of origin rather than purchasing and exporting it before evaluation. State-of-the-art RF instrumentation was adapted and packaged to provide a transportable testing capability which could be deployed to remote locations by a small team at minimum cost and short notice. This capability was used to evaluate high-power RF sources from Russia and Ukraine.
