During Desert Shield/Storm, while on a surveillance mission for flight operations, I occupied one of the rear seats in a USN S-3 Viking aircraft. Immediately upon being catapulted from the deck of the USS Independence (CV-62), the aircraft experienced an inflight engine fire that required immediate emergency procedures to return the aircraft safely to the carrier.  I participated in the checklist monitoring and execution that ensured a safe return of the aircraft and crew to the flight deck of the aircraft carrier.  I was included among the four crew members so commended.
