Work History

SVIP Intern

Smithfield Hog Production, North Region
04.2025 - 07.2025
  • Conducted a study comparing the success of Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae (MHP) exposure via fogging in 8–10 week old replacement gilts using different exposure materials
  • Prepared high volume bronchoalveolar lavage and lung tissue homogenate exposure materials from the lungs of a donor animal infected with MHP
  • Eighteen barns were randomly assigned to one of five treatment groups (HVBAL at Cts of 25.2 [n= 2], 26 [n= 5], 28 [n= 5], 30 [n= 2], and lung tissue homogenate at a Ct of 26 [n= 4]).
  • At enrollment, these pigs were tagged, and deep tracheal swabs were collected and tested by PCR to confirm negative MHP status.
  • On-farm dilutions were performed to reach the designated Ct for each treatment group, creating our stock material. Stock material was mixed with one gallon of saline to create the fogging material. The assigned material was fogged using two Hurricane Ultra II Foggers
  • At 2 and 4 weeks post-exposure (WPE), deep tracheal swabs were additionally collected from all ear tagged pigs and tested for MHP by PCR

05.2024 - 06.2024

  • Engaged in swine herd health visits by assisting veterinarian with diagnostic sample collection and conducting on-site necropsies.
  • Accompanied veterinarian on farm calls and routine visits for small and large ruminants, assisting with procedures such as castration, vaccine administration, and ear tag placement.

  • Obtained backfat measurements at entry into the lactation rooms and at weaning for 522 gilts/sows.
  • Weighed all litters at birth and at weaning.
  • Recorded farrowing performance for all sows.
  • Cross fostered piglets within 24 hours of farrowing to match the number of functional teats.
