1. Why would you like to serve on the Forest Lake Area Schools ISD 831 School Board?
Serving on the school board would be a rewarding experience provide a way for me to give back to my community since I am passionate about
education and community involvement. I believe in quality education, being a part of the decision making process, working with complex issues,
improving academic standards, and working as a team player for the good of students and employees. I believe that each board member brings
unique qualities, talents, and perspectives that can help build community ties.
2. Please describe your background experiences with community involvement. How would this serve you as a board member?
As the executive director of the Forest Lake Area Historical Society I have led, along with over 70 volunteers/members and staff, community
projects that have displayed the history of the Forest Lake School District and local area. Collaborated with local government to preserve local
historical landmarks and have overseen projects for educational projects. In working with the school district, students have had the opportunity to
learn about historical societies, what it means to be a historian through lectures, participating in archiving objects, and researching for history
classes the local landmarks. In my past role as a history teacher I was able to build relationships with donors organizations to get funding for
various projects at the Community School, such as signage, t-shirts for the entire student body and staff, field trips, and student organizations. In
doing such work, it has allowed me to understand the role local businesses, organizations, and donors. These organizations can be brought
together to benefit the school district and such gives me a sense of satisfaction and joy in doing work that benefits others.
3. What leadership experiences do you have, what was you specific role, and what were your take-aways from that experience.
As the executive director of the Forest Lake Area Historical Society I have led strategic initiatives to enhance community engagement and awareness
With such, I have learned to be a team builder, visionary planner and be strategic in organizing and planning. As former teacher I have had the
opportunity to be a mentor and coach to students. I was involved in the mentor program at the Community School and coach various sports.
While at the high school as a teacher I was als a assistant wrestling coach, and assistant girls soccer coach. At the middle school I was the head
seventh and eighth grade baseball coach. In these leadership roles I was able to foster positive relationships with parents, community
sponsors and learned the value of such.
4. Describe your understanding of school board governance and the role it plays in district operations.
The school board governance should be in alignment with community values and priorities. The board must represent the community, supervise
the superintendent, balance a budget, and set policy that is in alignment with the vision of the community. School boards don't run the district, but
rather govern those that do. Also, school boards advocate for the community and set strategic goals and are required to protect the data security
of students and staff. It is my belief that board members should create a shared vision that represents the community. Plus, a school board
should develop policies for student achievement, build relationships with community sponsors and have to follow local, state, and federal
statutes/laws.
5. Describe your understanding of the decision making process on school boards. How would you react/respond if the majority of the board
took an action that you voted against.
Each board member brings a unique quality, ideas, and values that must be respected and understood. There may be times that various issues
may not be agreed upon but it is about compromise and respecting the opinions an ideals of others. Decisions should be clearly defined and clarity
and collaboration should take place. With such, there should be an advocacy for change if needed and procedures should be followed. With
such, if the board took action that I voted against I would strive to understand why by discussing with my colleagues to attain their perspective and
understanding, and ideals and strive to work together for the benefit of students, staff, and the community.
