Coaching Philosophy/Approach/Program Development

  • Several aspects go into building a successful coaching platform. Having 25 years of professional playing and coaching experience is only one aspect. Being a master communicator is also essential - Not only being able to determine how the lesson is structured and flows, you must be able to adapt your communication style, know when to push, when to encourage, when to simplify, how to explain and give instructions in a non-intimidating manner which makes sense to beginner level players while also being extremely detailed and technical, to the more advanced player. You must have the interpersonal communication skills that it takes to build rapport with everyone you encounter.
  • You also must be able to decipher within a few minutes which route each player needs. This is where my strengths lie. By paying close attention to every detail, getting to know each client, building relationships and genuinely being invested in the players' growth, is why my retention rate of clients is extremely high. I believe that their game is a direct reflection of my coaching. My goal is to grow their skill set to make their experience not only enjoyable but fruitful, creating lasting results and a love for the game of golf.
  • My approach during lessons and coaching is tailored to each individual client and player to ensure they reach their specific goals and full potential. I implement several systems as there is not a “one size fits all” set of rules in golf. Each swing, skill level, physical limitations, time constraints, all dictate what the body can and cannot do. It is my job to identify what the issues are and how to improve, in the following order:
  • 1. CONCEPT: does the player understand ball flight laws/why the ball does what it does; a significant percentage of the time the player is working on a concept AND executing it to their own detriment; or they are not aware they are creating the issue and the effect it has on the pieces listed below
  • 2. Contact: KING OF THE HILL- low point control/centeredness of hit
  • 3. Club Face: Geo start line of shot
  • 4. Ball Curvature: path/swing direction/deflection cause and effect
  • 5. Height/Distance: do they have the distance required to be functional on a golf course; do they have enough height (land angle) to be functional
  • 6. Equipment: This is very situational in my current role. I do let clients know cause and effect of how their equipment is currently functioning. If there are deficiencies or places to look where we can make gains with a correct fitting or even a strategy on how to optimize set composition for the type of course ms being played. I find there is always tons of opportunity here to add value.

Sample Lesson

  • 1. Introduction: I spend the first few minutes of a lesson getting to know the client, what their goals are and creating an environment where they feel comfortable and able to freely communicate. WHY is the player here? (do they have something specific to solve)? I also must quantify if their assessment is accurate. There is an art to this intro, being able to set the tone of the lesson. Setting expectations, learning how they communicate best and how you can clearly get your message across. This also must be done quickly. I am also finding out conceptually what the player knows/does not know, what their skill set looks like, what their experience is etc. (this is generally done as they are warming up; there are scenarios where I often try and have a better sense of these pieces before me meet as well)
  • 2. Diagnostic: - this is the portion to diagnose the issue at hand. I use data measurement for club and ball and 3D body motion capture to understand what the body’s role in the swing is. Depending on how I have assessed the player, I have different strategies on how I will implement any changes needed and what the quickest road to see change will
  • 3. REVIEW: lesson recap to make sure we are on the same page (always paired with video/audio notes, data where appropriate) practice template.

Program Development/Implementation

Over the course of my career, I have attended numerous seminars, product launches and camps where I have grown my knowledge and skill set as to what creates a successful program/event experience. Having creative ideas that are new and fresh is important, that being said you also need to have the organizational skills to implement and promote the program or event. We found that there are plenty of needs to solve for every level of golfer from beginner to the highly competitive group. The experience to problem solve and have the correct solutions and supporting it with crystal clear data/analytics is critical in today's modern instruction era. Why guess when you can measure. The instructional experience is critical but equally important if not more so is the ability to connect with the client or group. Knowing when to simplify concepts that can be relatable as well as when to get under the hood and dive deeper is critical for a successful experience. Bottom line is you need to be an expert in communication styles and how to read the person in front of you. The 25 plus years of coaching/playing at a high level has given me hands on experience to excel in these types of environments. The player's experience is key but at the end of the day they need to see results.
