Goalkeeper Coach

FC MIHAJLOVAC Serbia
08.2022 - 06.2023

My Training Methods with Women’s Goalkeepers 1. Technical Training Adjustments 2. Tactical Adaptations 3. Physical Conditioning Adjustments 4. Mental and Psychological Development 5. Specialized Drills I Use

As the goalkeeper coach for the women’s team at FC Mihajlovac in Serbia, I tailor my training methods to suit the specific needs of female goalkeepers. While the core principles of goalkeeping remain the same, I adapt my approach to focus on key differences in physicality, biomechanics, and game situations to maximize their performance.

I emphasize clean and efficient footwork, as movement and positioning are crucial for making saves. My training places extra focus on:

  • Hand positioning and grip strength to secure catches with smaller hand spans.
  • Lower-body strength to improve explosive dives and recoveries.
  • Customized diving techniques to ensure safe and effective landings.
  • Fast reaction training to help deal with close-range shots.

Women’s matches often feature a faster-paced midfield and different crossing dynamics, so I train my goalkeepers to:

  • Improve reading of lofted balls, anticipating their trajectory more effectively.
  • Develop quicker decision-making when dealing with high balls and through passes.
  • Command the defense vocally, ensuring strong communication and leadership.
  • Enhance 1v1 skills, helping them react aggressively but intelligently when facing attackers.

Understanding the physiological differences, I implement:

  • Core strength training to improve balance and diving explosiveness.
  • Speed-focused agility drills for sharper lateral movement.
  • Endurance-based exercises to maintain high performance throughout the match.
  • Injury prevention routines, especially for knees and shoulders.

Confidence is key for goalkeepers, so I emphasize:

  • Building self-belief through repetition and progressive difficulty.
  • Resilience training to help them stay focused after mistakes.
  • Leadership development to encourage communication and on-field presence.
  • Quick-reaction drills using unpredictable deflections.
  • High-ball training with variations in ball trajectory and pace.
  • Close-range reflex saves focusing on reaction speed.
  • 1v1 attacker vs. goalkeeper scenarios to improve timing and positioning.
  • Dynamic distribution exercises to enhance passing and throwing accuracy.

My approach at FC Mihajlovac is about refining the strengths of my goalkeepers while addressing key areas of improvement. I push them to be confident, agile, and technically precise, ensuring they can compete at the highest level.

Goalkeeper Coach

BOKELJ MONTENEGRO
08.2019 - 06.2022

My Training Methods 1. Technical Training 2. Tactical Awareness 3. Physical Development 4. Psychological Training 5. Specialized Drills I Use

As the goalkeeper coach for FC Bokelj’s first team, I take pride in developing my goalkeepers into confident, technically sound, and tactically aware players. My training sessions are designed to enhance their shot-stopping ability, positioning, distribution, and mental resilience, ensuring they are fully prepared for the demands of professional football.

I focus on the fundamentals of goalkeeping, emphasizing:

  • Footwork: Precise movements to maintain balance and positioning.
  • Handling: Secure grip on shots, crosses, and rebounds.
  • Diving Techniques: Efficient and safe landings to maximize reach.
  • Distribution: Improving accuracy in throws, kicks, and passes to launch attacks.
  • 1v1 Situations: Teaching goalkeepers how to close down attackers effectively.

A great goalkeeper isn’t just a shot-stopper—they must be a leader on the field. I train my keepers to:

  • Read the game and anticipate opponents’ movements.
  • Command the box, communicating effectively with defenders.
  • Position correctly in different phases of play.
  • Act as a sweeper-keeper when necessary, aiding in buildup play.

To handle the physical demands of the position, I implement:

  • Strength and power training for explosive movement.
  • Agility drills to improve quick reactions.
  • Endurance work to maintain sharpness throughout 90 minutes.
  • Flexibility exercises to prevent injuries and enhance movement efficiency.

Mental toughness is key for goalkeepers, so I work on:

  • Building confidence, helping them stay composed under pressure.
  • Decision-making drills to improve reactions in high-stress situations.
  • Resilience training to recover quickly from mistakes.
  • Reaction drills: Small ball and unpredictability training for reflexes.
  • Shot-stopping drills: Facing a variety of shots in quick succession.
  • Cross and aerial ball training: Improving ability to claim high balls under pressure.
  • 1v1 drills: Teaching goalkeepers how to react in close-range situations.
  • Footwork circuits: Ladder drills, cone drills, and explosive side movements.

My goal is to create well-rounded, modern goalkeepers who are not only excellent shot-stoppers but also leaders on the field. I push my players to improve every day, ensuring they are prepared to perform at the highest level.

Goalkeeper Coach

FC SMEDEREVO SERBIA
08.2017 - 06.2019

As a goalkeeper coach at FC Smederevo, I focus on developing both the men’s and women’s goalkeepers by improving their technical skills, tactical awareness, physical conditioning, and mental strength. My goal is to make them more confident, agile, and decisive in every match situation.

I emphasize proper footwork, ensuring my goalkeepers move efficiently to get into the best position. Handling is crucial, so I train them to secure different types of shots—whether it's a low-driven strike, a high ball, or a powerful shot from close range. Diving techniques are a major focus, teaching them how to land safely while reaching for difficult saves. Distribution is another key area, where I work on accurate throws, rolls, and kicks to start counterattacks.

I teach my goalkeepers how to read the game, anticipate through-balls, and organize the defense. I make sure they understand proper positioning, so they always cover the goal effectively. I also work on commanding the box, ensuring they are vocal leaders who communicate with their defenders. In modern football, goalkeepers must also play with their feet, so I encourage them to be comfortable acting as a sweeper-keeper when necessary.

I include specific exercises to improve their strength and power, helping them make stronger saves. We focus on agility and reflexes, using reaction drills to sharpen their response time. Endurance training is also important so they can stay sharp for a full 90 minutes. To prevent injuries, I incorporate flexibility drills that improve their movement and recovery.

I teach my goalkeepers to be mentally tough, helping them stay confident even after mistakes. I emphasize decision-making, making sure they know when to come out for the ball and when to hold their position. Above all, I work on mental resilience, so they can handle pressure, stay focused, and lead from the back.

  • Reaction Drills: Using small balls or unexpected shots to sharpen reflexes.
  • Shot-Stopping Exercises: Facing rapid shots from different angles.
  • Crosses and High Balls: Training them to claim aerial balls under pressure.
  • 1v1 Situations: Teaching them how to close down attackers and make themselves big.
  • Footwork Training: Using ladders and cones to improve quick lateral movements.

My goal is to create goalkeepers who are not only skilled shot-stoppers but also leaders on the field. I push them to improve every day, ensuring they develop the confidence, technique, and mindset needed to succeed.
