Work History
Special Projects Editor,
Consolidated Publishing
Anniston, AL
12.2014 - Current
My role involves serving as editor of Lakeside Living (a monthly magazine covering the Logan Martin Lake area) and overseeing production of 12 annual special newspaper supplements (ranging in size from 1 to 6 sections). Key components of the role are content development, overseeing staff and freelance writers, coordinating with our sales and marketing team to maintain existing partnerships and develop new ones, and representing Lakeside Living in the community.
During my tenure as editor of Lakeside Living and working in tandem with the sales and marketing team's efforts, my focus on elevating the quality of content has resulted in a 61-percent increase in the magazine's page count and a corresponding increase in ad revenue.
Freelance Writer/Content Creator,
Self Employed Writer
Birmingham, AL
01.2004 - Current
As a freelancer, I published various feature articles for print and digital publications while developing the features-driven websites Chattanooga Profile and Birmingham Profile. The focus of both was telling stories about unique people and places in The Scenic City and The Magic City.
In 2011, I began the publication of The Cobalt Club, a blog that garnered positive reviews in Birmingham media for its quirky approach to storytelling. Publication ended in 2014, and I'm at work now converting The Cobalt Club into a book.
Since then, I have contributed features and reviews to such print and digital publications as Good Grit, Magic City Post, The Terminal, and Weld of Birmingham.
Editor,
Community Newspaper Holdings Inc.
Pell City, AL
03.2010 - 11.2014
My time with CNHI was spent at the St. Clair News-Aegis, a 152-year-old weekly newspaper in the Birmingham metro area. Initially hired as the sports editor, I later assumed the roles of interim managing editor and editor. My role involved coverage of high school, college, and professional sports, general news coverage, feature writing, and overseeing freelance writers and photographers.
Upon becoming editor, I undertook a well-received redesign of the newspaper, modernizing its appearance and updating archaic albeit reader-favorite features to modern journalistic standards.
News Editor,
North Georgia Newspapers
Dalton, GA
01.2000 - 06.2000
As news editor, I was part of the team that launched The Hamilton Post, an all-too-short-lived weekly community newspaper in Chattanooga, Tennessee. My role involved producing and developing content, overseeing a small news staff, meeting with stakeholders, and representing the newspaper at civic functions.
Associate News Editor & Sports Editor,
Espy Publishing Company
Summerville, GA
01.1987 - 03.1997
My first professional role involved developing and producing content (including coverage of local and state government, politics, sports, social services, courts, business, education, utilities, and features) for The Summerville News, Georgia's second-largest weekly newspaper, also contributing to and producing special supplements dealing with such diverse topics as industry, sports, home and garden, World War II, and the Civil War.
I wrote two weekly columns: the general interest Commentary and the award-winning Political Talk.
