The Social Services Aid provides direct support of the professional staff aligned to the Mental Health and Spinal Cord Injury Service Lines at the Edward Hines Jr. VA Medical Center. The work primarily involves contact with Veterans and their families and provides a wide range of supportive and direct care duties at the ward level in support of patient activities.

• Responsible for the well being and safety of 6 to 21 patients on the unit.
• Transports patients from the unit to other unit of the medical center.
• Escorts patients to examinations and appointments.
• Assists with the proper positioning of patient in bed or chair.
• Maintain a safe, clean, and orderly work environment through routine maintenance activities such as ordering and stocking.
• Assumes responsibility for the safety of patients including room checks every 15 minutes.
• Identifies a patient in acute distress and notifies the RN.
• Performs low level disinfection which involves physical cleaning using detergent or enzymatic solutions to reduce or eliminate bioburden.
