Provide service-oriented leadership to progressive faith community.

  • Started a weekly meal in partnership with Community Lunch on Capitol Hill that has become five meals per week, serving 25,000 people and over 100,000 meals per year. Many, or most, of those served are homeless and suffer with mental illness and/or drug addiction.
  • Respond to people's personal needs and wants with active listening, care and coaching, if appropriate, and healthy boundaries.
  • Successfully balance regular teaching, public speaking, providing caring relationship, with other leadership tasks, including administration and effective teaming facilitation with volunteers and staff.
  • During tenure, a 1.3 million dollar building rehab was accomplished, Anti-Racism, Climate Justice, Pride and LGBTQ teams were established. Guided congregation into current pursuit of redeveloping property for low-income housing and new operating space for congregation and non-profits of the area.

After working as a coaching consultant with The Pacific Institute since 2003, created The Pacific Institute Community at the request of TPI Chairman, Lou Tice.

  • Consulted and provided services and cognitive science-based education (based on the work of Dr. Albert Bandura, Dr. Martin Seligman, and others) to executive and mid-level leadership to change to accomplish goals.
  • Consulted and supported organizational change to a constructive/high performance culture. Characteristics of this high-performance culture include being humanistic, affiliative, self-actualizing and achievement oriented.
  • Developed constructive, highly effective leadership styles within organizations executive leaders, mid-level leaders, and beyond. Assisted organizations in understanding cultural current reality, establishing an organizational vision, and “close the gap” with a people-oriented methodology.
  • Clients included City of Los Angeles, Los Angeles County Community and Senior Service, Port of San Diego, City of Fresno, Montana Department of Corrections, and Mississippi Department of Human Services.

Led restructuring of this South Central, Los Angeles congregational system and leadership to be a ministry driven, “permission giving” system. This effort included establishing mission, vision, core values and beliefs along with moving from a committee structure to an action, team-oriented system. Increased worship attendance seventy-five percent.

Joined with Pete Carroll, USC Football Coach (later Seattle Seahawks), and Lou Tice, Chairman of The Pacific Institute, to create an organization with the vision of stopping violence and creating peace and prosperity in South Central, Los Angeles.

  • Implemented The Pacific Institutes cognitive psychology based education gather multiple agencies and partners to a shared vision for alignment.
  • Assisted in developing board, organizational system, and collaborative relationships, including LA Sheriff Department, faith and community-based organizations, gang intervention, Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services, Los Angeles County Office of Education, and LA County Probation.
  • Provided primary leadership though developmental evolution.

Continued work (16 years total) with gang-involved people, focusing on 18-32 year old, to interrupt violence and serve them to their self-determined, healthy goals and outcomes.

  • Developed personal, healthy relationships with gang-involved individuals and responded to their needs and wants by providing resources, assistance, and personal coaching and care.
  • Created intervention efforts, such as the “Exodus Urban Academy” employment assistance project, raising half a million dollars within its first three years.
  • Developed a cognitive psychology based self-development coaching and teaming program, informed by the work of The Pacific Institute (Seattle), and employed a rites of passage element.
  • Managed government and foundation grants, achieved 100% of Department of Labor job placement outcomes and 150% of job retention for that particular grant.
  • Created and led Homie Accents, a micro-business making and selling specialty soap and lotion to employ gang involved individuals.
  • Provided cognitive psychology (The Pacific Institute) education to gang involved inmates in the Los Angeles County Jail system.
  • Consistently maintained “street outreach” and relationship development as the primary element of this work.
