  • Ensure that all materials needed for the assigned surgery are ready and available when the surgeon needs it
  • Research all pertinent information on the patient coming into the operating room
  • Communicate relevant information regarding the patient in hopes of said patient receiving the best care possible
  • Assist in preparing the sterile field for surgery
  • Assess the patient in pre-op by asking the required questions and answering any questions the patients or patients family members having regarding the procedure
  • Positioning and prepping patients for surgery
  • Completing a timeout in a thorough fashion reiterating the correct patient, correct surgery, correct site and any other information deemed relevant to the patient and procedure including labs, allergies, and positioning
  • Chart in CERNER throughout the case
  • Assess the sterile field and verifying that everyone's needs are met
  • Scrub in using aseptic technique to assist with holding the heart during pump cases and to assist the team with closing counts
  • Prepare the patient to leave the OR and transporting to recovery
  • Bedside hand-off to PACU or phone hand-off to ICU
  • Close out the chart, returning any blood products that were not used during the case and turning in all paperwork for each individual case
  • Return to OR and assisting with cleaning up and turning the room over for any following cases
  • Other duties include but are not limited to restocking supply cabinets, assisting in other procedures when available, picking up and dropping off blood or blood products for others when available, providing breaks and lunch breaks to other nurses when available
  • Communicate with departments such as lab, blood bank, pathology, radiology, SSI, SPD, and any other department that needs to be contacted for any reason regarding a case or my department
  • Complete any required continued education assignments given by the facility
  • Compliance with the rules and regulations as well as training and certifications
