Experience/Skills gained as a student during the clinical year:

Became competent in taking histories, performing physical examinations, and developing a differential diagnosis and treatment plan. Documented and presented findings in a concise and comprehensive manner. Developed a variety of technical skills including laceration repair using sutures, staples, or dermabond, instillation of local anesthesia and digital blocks, wound care, splinting, incision and drainage of abscesses, fluorescein staining, ear lavage, throat culture, IM injections, IV catheterization, venipuncture, pelvic exams, rectal exams, hemoccult tests, paracentesis and thoracentesis, interpretation of imaging including EKG, XRAY, CT and MRI, and first assisting in general, vascular, gynecologic and orthopedic surgeries. Cared for and developed report with diverse patients of all ages.

• Performed venipuncture to collect patient blood specimens in a variety of settings including the emergency department, intensive care unit, outpatient clinic, and patient care units
• Utilized, cared for, and provided patient education on PICC, CVC, and Port maintenance.
• Kept patients and coworkers safe by following infection control protocols
• Maintained communication with providers, nurses, and the central lab throughout the day in order to prioritize patients and maximize efficiency

• Maintained a section of six beds by setting up plasmapheresis machines, performing venipuncture, and monitoring donors for adverse reactions.
• Followed standard operating procedures to troubleshoot machines and made needle adjustments as needed
• Screened donors before donation by taking vital signs, performing finger sticks to test hematocrit and total protein, and reviewing donor health histories.
• Became certified to train new employees in phlebotomy and other tasks
• Became a certified "lead" technician and was tasked with performing phlebotomy on first-time donors and donors with difficult veins.
