Senior Project Engineer

Urbacon Trading and Contracting
09.2019 - 10.2020

Project : Lusail Palace / Project Design and Built / Project Duration 6 Years // Project Value 5 Billion Dollars // Project Consultant AA & PEO & Highness

Responsibility :

  • At the beginning, I was assigned to manage the construction works of five tunnels, divided as follows: two tunnels for the Citizen, two tunnels for VIPs, and a special tunnel referred to as a (UGS).
  • I reviewed all structural drawings and ensured that there were no issues that could hinder the progress of the works.
  • The tunnels are 8 meters deep and L-shaped, with a width that starts at 6 meters and gradually expands to a square shape measuring 20X20 meters at the end.
  • I planned the dewatering process to remove the stagnant water that had accumulated over a long period after excavation, which resulted in the presence of clayey soil that needed to be treated before starting the construction works. This was the first challenge I encountered on site.
  • The dewatering process was carried out by excavating channels with slopes along the edges of the long side of the tunnel and the square end, directing the water toward the end of the tunnel. The channels discharged into a pit measuring 4*4 meters with a depth of 4 meters, where the water was collected.
  • I coordinated with dewatering contractors, Action Company and WJ Company, to supply the pumps and begin the groundwater dewatering process from inside the sump pit. According to the plan and to ensure continuous operation, we installed two 6-inch pumps in each sump pit. The dewatered water was discharged into water tankers in coordination with the logistics team to transport it off-site, as there was no available space for water collection within the site.
  • The second major challenge I faced was the removal of the clayey soil or ( Loos Material). We proposed several solutions to the consulting office; however, they were all rejected, and a final decision was made to remove the clay soil that had been beneath the stagnant water. We immediately proceeded to carry out the consultant's request and removed the clayey soil.
  • Another critical task I faced after the removal of the clayey soil was the increase in the quantity of blinding concrete, as determined during the soil compaction process and the placement of the 1000-gauge polyethylene sheet. We proposed several solutions to reduce the concrete volume and submitted them to the consulting office; however, they were rejected once again. The consultant instructed us to proceed with pouring the increased quantity of blinding concrete without adding any other materials during the casting process. The work was executed accordingly, in compliance with the approved standards and specifications.
  • I led a team of engineers and supervisors at the start of the construction operations, along with a group of contractors. I held meetings with them to review the execution plan and clearly defined the tasks. I then distributed responsibilities among the teams and contractors to ensure that each group had a clear understanding of their assigned duties.
  • I secured the five tunnels by providing top-side protection through the installation of a waterproof barrier and covering the excavation slope from top to bottom with green safety mesh. This was done to protect the workers below from falling rocks or soil during operations. Strict adherence to PPE regulations was enforced, and the safety engineer was given full authority to take disciplinary action and make decisions as needed.
  • I led the entire construction process through to completion and handover, ensuring full compliance with the approved standards, specifications, and design drawings.

Achievement :

  • The successful implementation of the dewatering plan I developed and executed helped accelerate the process without any delays to the scheduled timeline and without incurring additional costs, as it was covered under the excavation contractor's scope of work.
  • I successfully led the operations as per the WBS from initiation to closure.
  • Successfully resolved potential issues in advance through proactive analysis of execution processes and by reviewing the risk register to identify challenges that might arise during the course of the work.
  • Successfully managed communication among stakeholders, as well as technical, administrative, and consultancy teams, to ensure smooth operations without interruptions. Work was handed over through an IR (Inspection Request) to obtain approval and proceed to the next phase, while ensuring the quality of the executed works prior to handover.
  • I consistently ensured safety and security on site, with zero injuries reported among the teams during execution activities. I emphasized strict adherence to PPE and the safety guidelines provided by the site safety officer to ensure that all teams returned home safely and I succeeded in achieving this.
